Algiers and Doyle dominate Saturday’s featured Jebel Ali Mile

The biggest race of the Jebel Ali season, Saturday’s Group 3 Jebel Ali Mile looked a quality and competitive renewal on paper but actually turned out to be a relatively straightforward assignment for James Doyle and Algiers, a first winner of the season for both trainer Simon Crisford and owners Rabbah Racing.

Settled just behind the early pace, set by Royston Ffrench and Down on Da Bayou, Doyle asked his mount to win his race passing the 400m pole and they soon hit the front, running on strongly all the way to the line with the race won entering the final 150m.

A 5yo entire son of Shamardal and previously a dual Listed race winner in France for Godolphin and Andre Fabre, Algiers  was registering a fourth and most important career victory to date, on just his second start for current connections. On his local debut, he was runner-up over the real 1950m stamina test here at Jebel Ali,

Doyle, who only had the one ride on the card, said: "He showed plenty of ability in France and he ran very well here the first time before tiring so we thought the drop to 1600m would suit.
"We had a wide draw and I was not really travelling well until halfway up the straight when he came back on the bridle and carried me there going very strongly. He then finished it off very well and it was a good performance."

The main support contest, a 1200m conditions race for 3yos, provided Libyan Classic  the perfect opportunity to shed his maiden tag at the fourth attempt, responding gamely to the urgings of Antonio Fresu riding in the red and white striped silks of Elbashir Salem Elhrari for Musabbeh Al Mheiri.

Fourth on all three previous outings, two as a juvenile last year and most recently 20 days ago, at Meydan each time, he clearly relished this new surface and the uphill finish.

Fresu said: "That was a good, battling performance and he really responded well when I asked him. Conditions have clearly suited and 1400m here should not be a problem for him in the future.

The best of the handicaps was over 1600m and owner Elhrari was celebrating a double after Melicertes  landed the spoils under Pat Cosgrave for Bhupat Seemar, himself completing a brace on the card.

Another who had won twice in France for Fabre and Godolphin, the 6yo gelded son of Poet's Voice was opening his local account at the ninth attempt and on his Jebel Ali debut.

Seemar said: "We think 1400m is probably his ideal trip but there are few options for him at that trip. He had come down in the handicap and we were keen to run him here right-handed so worked him here and he loved it so we were pretty hopeful today."

Earlier, Rayig  benefitted from a furious early gallop in the 1200m handicap, produced late by Tadhg O'Shea to lead close home for RRR Racing and initiate Seemar's double.

Settled well of the pace, the 6yo gelded son of Exceed And Excel crept closer at halfway and when the early leaders, predictably, dropped away was left with Fawaareq to chase down which he did successfully in the final 50m.

It was a third career victory for the versatile gelding who shed his main tag over 1600m here at Jebel Ali in November 2019 with his subsequent win at Al Ain over 1000m last March.

O'Shea said: "The horse deserved that as he has been running consistently well this season and this 1200m really suits him but I had to keep waiting for a gap. Luckily it appeared when I needed it."

The opening 1400m handicap proved a red letter occasion for Rashed Ali Al Rayhi who saddled his first ever winner, as well as a maiden success for owner Shoaib Ahmed Sarfaraz, courtesy of Chosen Mark  who won cosily under Omani apprentice Saif Al Balushi.

Slowly away, Al Balushi allowed his mount to gather his stride before closing on the main pack at halfway and striking the front entering the final 325m after which they never looked likely to be caught.

A 4yo gelded son of The Last Lion, Chosen Mark was doubling his career tally, adding this prize to a 3yo maiden he won on debut at Newcastle on the all-weather in July when trained by John Quinn for whom he only ran once more before switching to the UAE.

The 1400m maiden looked a decent race for its type and developed into a duel throughout the final 200m with Carpe Momentum trying desperately to reclaim the lead from stable companion Ebnzaidoon  but the latter and Pat Dobbs just came out on top of the Doug Watson duo in the colours of Ali A Aneizi.

Making his UAE debut, the 4yo Speightstown gelding was second once and third twice from five UK outings for Shadwell when trained by John & Thady Gosden, having his fifth and final start for them when well beaten at Sandown in June.

Watson said: "He was a bit late joining us and took a while to get going so was perhaps a bit short of work but he ran as recently as June and had been working well so we were keen to get him going and this looked a good spot.
"He has having a really good blow afterwards so should definitely improve fitness wise and he has shown a great attitude."

Jockey and trainer completed a double with the hard fought victory of Rougher  in the concluding 1950m handicap for EERC (Emirates Entertainment Racing Club).
