Yoozuna continued to show promise on Monday at Toulouse when getting off the mark at his second career attempt, looking impressive in the home straight.
The son of Kizuna demonstrated a professional attitude leaving the stalls, breaking on terms with the field and sharing the lead with Cuncerto, Good Show and Poca Gen in the early stages. The pace looked strong as they negotiated the first turn and this was maintained down the back straight with the Christophe Ferland trained colt settled back in third, two lengths off the leaders.
Over fifteen lengths covered the group at halfway as Poca Gen stretched a further four lengths ahead. Around the final right-handed turn, Yoozuna was travelling strongly, and the colt quickened away in the home straight. The official winning margin was four and a half-lengths but it could have been a lot further.
Yoozuna showed plenty of promise on debut last season when second at Deauville (turf) over 1600m in August. He seemed to benefit from the break and longer distance to produce a promising second run. It will be interesting to see how the Wertheimer Brothers owned colt can progress for the remainder of the year. He holds an entry in both the G1 Prix du Jockey Club (2100m) and G1 Grand Prix de Paris (2400m).
Sire Kizuna was a high-class Japanese performer. He came over to France for the 2013 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m) and finished a good fourth behind Treve. Prior to that he found success in the G2 Prix Niel (2400m) that year.
With a good pedigree and promising form, Yoozuna is a name for the notebook.
