A field of six colts faced the starter. As expected, after jumping in a good line, Simca Mille – looking for a four timer – went to the lead and set a good pace with Theo Bachelot riding. The winner, Onesto, was tailed out to the rear of the field eight lengths from the leader and remained in that position until well into the home straight. Jockey Stephane Pasquier adopted a patient ride, timing his run to perfection. Once the field had sorted themselves into a rhythm there was little change and whilst all runners made their move at the 400m marker, it became clear at 200m it was going to be a match between the long-time leader Simca Mille and the fast-closing Onesto. The winner outstayed his rivals. At his previous start in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club (2100m) he was not disgraced beaten 6.75L into fifth placing but running home from near last in a big field. On this occasion Onesto relished the small field, not being too far from the leader and the extra 300m of the Grand Prix de Paris. This was an even field where all six horses held claims to winning the race. With there being no excuses, it would not surprise if all horses were to progress. A tilt at the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m) is his next target. The last horse to complete the double was Rail Link in 2006. |
