Hong Kong Jockey Club buys four colts in South Africa

The Hong Kong Jockey Club purchased four eye-catching colts out of the recent 2024 BSA National Yearling Sale in Johannesburg, South Africa for ZAR9.05 million (approx. HK$3.735 million).

The Club secured the sale-topper, Lot 175, a son of dual SA Champion Sire Gimmethegreenlight for ZAR6 million. Among his Group 1-winning progeny are Yulong Prince, Gimme A Prince, She's A Keeper and Lucky Lad.

Lot 194 fell the Club's way for ZAR1.3 million. The youngster is a half-sibling to the Group 1-winning Silver Darling, who took out the Woolavington 2000 in 2022.

Lot 98 was secured for ZAR950,000. The bay is by four-time Group 1 winner What A Winter, winner of the sprinting "Triple Crown" in South Africa. His best progeny so far includes top-level winners Russet Air, Clouds Unfold and Warrior's Rest.

Lot 340 was bought for ZAR800,000. The colt is by Fire Away, a high-class son of War Front, who scored at Group 3 level in the United States of America. Luna Halo is the sire's leading progeny so far as a seven-time winner from 12 starts in South Africa.

The bay is a half-brother to Singapore Sling, winner of the 2018 Hong Kong Classic Cup, who also finished runner-up in the Hong Kong Derby.
