High five for Pinheiro in Singapore

Jockey Bernardo Pinheiro was on a roll at the Saturday meeting after he bagged five winners in Singapore for the first time.

It was a rare feat achieved by the former two-time Brazilian champion apprentice jockey at his 10th year of riding, but it was not the first time that he scored a five-timer.

The young hoop first flew over to Southeast Asia and began riding mainly in Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh back in July 2019. Barely two months into his stint, Pinheiro booted home five wins on September 21, courtesy of Gyarados, Sacred Galaxy, Mr Wolff, Race For Fame and Flash One at Selangor Turf Club.

Following his quintet of wins atop Silo, Rich Fortune, Real Efecto, Two Million and Cosmic Dancer  on Saturday, Pinheiro has now chalked up 590 wins in his riding career and currently sits on seventh on the jockeys' log on 14 wins (tied with jockey A'Isisuhairi Kasim but sits back on a lesser countback for seconds).

"It's very special. It reminded me of the day (September 21) in 2019 when I first rode five winners in Kuala Lumpur," said Pinheiro.

"Today, I repeated the feat. I have ridden a double, three or four winners in a day many times, but it's only the second time that I won five in a day.

"I'm so happy I can't find words to describe how I feel, really. I want to thank all the trainers and connections for their support so far.

"I knew I had very good chances in all my 10 rides today, so I was not very surprised (with the five wins). I'll just keep looking for more!"

Among his 10 rides, the Jason Lim-trained Sky Eye was a late scratching in the highlight race, the $110,000 Group 3 Kranji Sprint (1200m), but Pinheiro picked up another ride in The August for trainer Jerome Tan. The pair ran fourth to Mr Malek.

It was another unsuccessful raid in the local feature races for him, but Pinheiro was still on cloud nine and rather thankful for his 50% strike rate on Saturday.

Of his two winners, Silo ($17) and Rich Fortune ($18), for trainer Stephen Crutchley, the former looked a promising juvenile after he knocked in his first win in the $75,000 Zac Spirit 2014 and 2015 Stakes, a Restricted Maiden race (1200m) that was ran alongside 13 other two-year-olds on the field.

"I was very confident with Silo because he had everything in his favour," he said.

"He's the only one on the field with running experience, good draw (one) and once the gate opened, I sat him in a good position (third on the rails).

"Everything went well for him but I got a bit worried at the top of the straight as I was looking for a gap but once it appeared, the horse was quick to go through."

Owned by the Toast Trusts & Silo Stable, the son of National Defense took his earnings to close to $50,000 after that first win in two starts.

As for his three other winners for trainer David Kok (Real Efecto, $25) and Lim (Two Million, $18 and Cosmic Dancer, $31), Pinheiro thought his third win on-the-trot aboard Cosmic Dancer in the $50,000 Why Be 2006 Stakes, a Class 4 race (1100m) in the Lucky Last was 'special'.

"Cosmic Dancer's win was special because I've ridden him three times so far and he won them all," said the elated hoop.

"I was very confident though Jason was a bit worried with the weight (58.5kgs) and barrier (11), but he is a young horse and he's improved."

A three-year-old son of Vancouver, Cosmic Dancer has now won four from seven starts and earned more than $80,000 in prizemoney for the Thunderbird Racing Stable.
