Options Still Open For Wise Dan

Trainer Charlie LoPresti continues to weigh up his options for a comeback race for two-time US Horse of the Year Wise Dan.

Wise Dan underwent colic surgery in May and is working strongly at Saratoga where he had his third timed fast gallop on Saturday.

LoPresti was not happy with his second turf breeze in July 25 and chose the dirt for Saturday's work.

"I was very pleased with what I saw this morning," LoPresti said after the work.

"He handled it really good, better than last week. That's the kind of work I was looking for.

“I want to see him back to where he used to be, and now he's coming the right way."

After the July 25 gallop LoPresti decided to bypass the G2 Fourstardave on August 9, a race Wise Dan has won the two previous years.

He is now considering at the G2 Bernard Baruch on turf or the G1 Woodward Stakes on the dirt. Both races are on August 30.

"I've got two options," LoPresti said. "If he keeps going the right way, he'll either run in the Baruch or the Woodward."

Beyonf that LoPresti will consider the G1 Woodbine Mile on Turf on September 14, a race Wise Dan has won the past two years.

The trainer also has mentioned the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile on October 4 at Keeneland, which Wise Dan captured in 2012 and finished second in last year.

Wise Dan, a two-time winner of the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile and the winner of 10 G1 events, has raced twice this year for repeat wins in the G1 Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland and in April and the G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs in May before he was struck by colic.
