Tonalist Ready For Travers Showdown

Trainer Christophe Clement has proclaimed Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist ready for his third match up with Wicked Strong in the $1.25 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga on August 23.

Tonalist and Wicked Strong were among a quintet of Travers hopefuls who worked at Saratoga on August 16.

They were joined by Commanding Curve, Coltimus Prime and Charge Now but all the focus was on Tonalist and Wicked Strong as they prepare for the third clash of the summer.

Tonalist won the G1 Belmont Stakes in June leaving Wicked Strong in a dead-heated for fourth with Kentucky Derby winner Cailfornia Chrome.

The tbales were turned when Wicked Strong defeated Tonalist by 2 1/4 lengths in the G2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga on July 26.

Clenmt is eager for the third rolund after Tonalist after his work on Saturday saw him lead home a stablemate by more than two lengths.

"It was a nice work," said Clement. "We'll have to see how he comes out of it but to me the horse is very, very fit.

“The plan is not to do any more fast work. Keep him happy, keep him sound, and run him next Saturday.”

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens was equally happy with Wicked Strong after his colt breezed six furlongs over the main track.

"He worked like he usually does," said Jerkens. "It looked like the track was very fast so I knew he would skip right along.

“I didn't want him to go too fast because he's already a little more on the bridle with the blinkers on."

Jerkens said Wicked Strong, who won the G1 Wood Memorial in April at Aqueduct prior to a fourth in the Kentucky Derby, will have a short blowout on August 21 to finish his prep for the Travers.

Trainer Dallas Stewart gave Kentucky Derby second Commanding Curve a five-furlong work over the main track.

"It was a good workout,” Stewart said. “It will tighten him up really good. He's not a superior work horse, but he put a lot of effort in today."

Commanding Curve is winless in five starts at 3, all in graded stakes. He was third in the Louisiana Derby prior to his Kentucky Derby second and followed with a ninth in the Belmont and fourth in the Jim Dandy.

"He's got to pick his game up. He's got to improve to win,”Stewart said.

“Throw out the Belmont and he's been knocking at the door, so we'll see what happens."

Canadian classic winner Coltimus Prime got acquainted with Saratoga's main track on Saturday for trainer Justin Nixon.

It was the first breeze for the colt since winning the second leg of Canada's Triple Crown, the Prince of Wales Stakes, at Fort Erie on July 29.

Curlin Stakes runner-up Charge Now, went five furlongs on the Oklahoma training track in the fastest time of 18 horses at the distance. He is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott.

The likely pace presence of Haskell Invitational winner Bayern will make the Travers the summer highlight for the three-year-olds.
