Midnight Lucky Retired

Dual G1 winner Midnight Lucky has been withdrawn from next weekend’s Breeder's Cup Filly & Mare Sprint and will be retired.

Trainer Bob Baffert confirmed her retirement after a workout at Santa Anita.

"She worked, and it wasn't a bad work, but I was looking for more," Baffert said.

"Going into a race like this, I just didn't feel like it was her typical work. It's too bad, because she'd been so brilliant in her two works before this."

The 4YO daughter of Midnight Lute had not raced since a 4 1/2-length romp in her first try against older fillies and mares in the G1 Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs on May 3 in her only start this year and 11 months after her previous start when she won the G1 Acorn Stakes in her final start at 3.

Baffert said he felt "pressed for time" to get Midnight Lucky ready for the $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita on November 1.

"She's such a good filly and she gives it everything she's got but I just knew she wasn't ready for this,” he said.

Midnight Lucky retires with four wins from only five starts and earnings of $565,022.

Midnight Lucky will go to Hill 'N' Dale Farm in Kentucky before a decision is made on which stallion she is to be bred to in 2015.

Midnight Lucky's dam Citiview is a full sister to G1 winner Hookedonthefeelin, who produced his three-time G1 winner Pussycat Doll.
