Sherman Puts The Polish On California Chrome

While the lone start for California Chrome since the Triple Crown didn't go as planned, trainer Art Sherman likes what he is seeing as his dual classic winner completes his Breeders Cup preparations at his Los Alamitos base in California.

Following a sixth in the G2 Pennsylvania Derby on September at Parx Racing, California Chrome has worked each on each Saturday through October at Los Alamitos.

He started with a handy four-furlong bullet on October 4 when fastest of 34 works at the distance before stretching out to a five furlong move on October 11 and to six furlongs on October 18.

He turned in his final pre-Breeders' Cup Classic work on October 25 clocking a sharp five furlongs in 59.6 under jockey Victor Espinoza, the second fastest of 20 works at the distance.

After the work Sherman was enthusiastic in his assessment of California Chrome's condition n advance of the Breeders' Cup Classic on November 1 at Santa Anita.

"He's training like his old self, like he trained before the Santa Anita Derby," Sherman said.

"I'm really pumped up. I just know that you haven't seen the real California Chrome run again since he was on that winning streak."

Before losing his bid for the Triple Crown in the Belmont Stakes in June, California Chrome made the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes part of a six-race win streak that began with the King Glorious Stakes at Hollywood Park in December.

He won the San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita before leaving California to won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

California Chrome won his three races at Santa Anita by a combined total of 18 lengths.

California Chrome has gone off as the favourite in his past six starts but that nod will likely go to the undefeated sophomore Shared Belief in the Breeders Cup Classic.

"Let the pressure be on Shared Belief," Sherman said.

"In his last two races he hasn't gotten the trip at all. I don't want to cry, but you haven't seen the California Chrome that I know," Sherman said.

"I look for California Chrome to run a big race. He had kind of a precarious race under his belt in Pennsylvania and I look for him to bounce back pretty darn good right now."

"I've been pumped up ever since we've gotten back in training. I noticed his attitude is different; he wants to do something, I know he's run big at Santa Anita, so it'll be like going back to his home track.

“Horse of the Year is going to be on the line. I'm looking forward to it. I get butterflies when I think about it."

With a victory, California Chrome would join two-time winner Tiznow as the only California-breds to win the Breeders' Cup Classic.

California Chrome was scheduled to leave Los Alamitos on October 26 for Santa Anita.
