Texas Red Takes Aim At American Pharoah

Texas Red has emerged from his victory in last weekend’s Jim Dandy Stakes in exceptional condition and is on course for the Travers Stakes and a clash with American Pharoah at Saratoga on August 29.

Julie Clark, the Saratoga-based assistant trainer to Keith Desormeaux, said the Breeders Cup Juvenile winner of last year was in great order.

"He recovered really quickly. I wondered if it might get him a little stressed, but it didn't seem to, not at all,” she reported.

Clark said the expected presence of American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes would not force a change of planes with Texas Red.

"It would be nicer to wait until the Breeders' Cup before that matchup, but it's inevitable so why not?" Clark said.

Clark said Desormeaux took notice of American Pharoah when the future champion first began training at Del Mar last summer.

American Pharoah defeated Texas Red in their first meeting in the G1 FrontRunner Stakes last September at Santa Anita.

American Pharoah then pulled out of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile only days from the race won in an extraordinary last to first performance by Texas Red.

Texas Red was sidelined by an abscess in February and missed a Triple Crown campaign.

Wood Memorial winner Frosted emerged from his second in the Jim Dandy in good shape and is also heading to the Travers according to his trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

"He lost his right front shoe, but luckily he's OK,” said McLaughlin.

“We're disappointed we got beat, but Texas Red is a nice horse. We gave Texas Red four pounds but In the Travers we'll be equal weights and hopefully, with four shoes on, we can turn the tables on him.”

Frosted had been competitive with American Pharoah through the Triple Crown series, making the Jim Dandy result a worthy form reference for the Travers.

Frosted had not raced since finishing second in the Belmont Stakes behind American Pharoah. Earlier in the year, the grey colt took the Wood Memorial and finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby won by American Pharoah.
