New Partners In Derby Hope Destin

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners has acquired a minority interest in record-breaking Tampa Bay Derby winner Destin ahead of his bid for Kentucky Derby honours.

They will race the Todd Pletcher-trained colt with Twin Creeks Racing Stables.

“We are excited to partner with Eclipse and their racing partners in Destin,” said Twin Creeks’ Randy Gullatt.

“Twin Creeks and Eclipse have both been in the same barn with Todd Pletcher for a long time, so there is familiarity and a comfort level working with Eclipse.

“I have great confidence it will be a good team, and we’re all now just looking forward to the Kentucky Derby.”

Aron Wellman, Eclipse President, added: “The Twin Creeks team and Todd have done an exceptional job of developing and managing Destin.

“He has exhibited brilliance in his pair of Graded stakes wins and is a fast and progressive colt.

“We are certainly bullish on his prospects for the Kentucky Derby, but equally as excited about the long-term vision we share with Twin Creeks for Destin’s racing future.”

Destin became a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby after back-to-back wins in the G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes and G2 Tampa Bay Derby.

In the latter, the grey colt defeated stablemate and subsequent G1 Wood Memorial winner Outwork in track record time. Significantly he also beat the race record set in 2007 by subsequent Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.

Destin breezed five furlongs last Saturday at Palm Beach Downs and was flown to Churchill Downs on Monday.

He is scheduled to have his final breeze for the Derby on Saturday. Javier Castellano, who guided Destin to victory in the Tampa Bay Derby, is committed to ride in the Kentucky Derby.

Destin was purchased by Twin Creeks as a yearling for $400,000 at the Keeneland September sale and to date has won three of his five starts.
