2016 Kentucky Derby - Baffert Going For Fifth Win

Champion trainer Bob Baffert is not discounting his chances of landing back to back wins in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

Baffert, a four-time winner of the Run For The Roses, has tempered expectations for his lone contender Mor Spirit following his soaring achievements with last year’s winner American Pharoah, the first Triple Crown champion since 1978.

However the Hall Of Fame trainer believes Mor Spirit is in the right form to play a big hand on Saturday after his final breeze at Churchill Downs on Monday.

The colt covered five furlongs in 59.80 seconds with race jockey Gary Stevens aboard.

"It went just as planned," Baffert said. "Gary was happy with him.

“He loves the surface. He goes over it much better than Santa Anita. That's half the battle, if they like it.

“He's very deceiving, a big, long-jumping horse. He's fast. He looks ready to me."

Mor Spirit comes to the Derby with the impressive record of three wins and four seconds in seven starts including a runner-up finish to Exaggerator in the Santa Anita Derby.

Stevens believes Mor Spirit is up to the challenge of taking on the unbeaten Nyquist in the Derby.

"Like Bob has said, he's no American Pharoah, but we don't know that yet," said Stevens, who finished second in last year's Derby aboard Firing Line.

"I know what I'm sitting on. I know what's there.

“He's coming into the race the right way, and he tries hard. He's going to run his race and we'll see if he's good enough."

Steve Asmussen’s pair Gun Runner and Creator also enjoyed their final work-outs at Churchil on Monday.

The newly elected Hall of Fame trainer was encouraged by the work of Gun Runner and Creator.

"They're cooling out extremely well and we're very excited for the Derby," Asmussen said.

Arkansas Derby winner Creator breezed four furlongs in 50.6 with fractional split times of 12.4; 25.2 and 38.

“He’s always had a lot of talent. You just wanted to see him put a little more effort into it and I think we’re there now,” Asmussen said.

“He’s developed late and grown up and matured. It looks like the further he goes the better he likes it.”
