2016 Kentucky Derby - 'Lucky' 13 Draw For Favourite Nyquist

Connections of Kentucky Derby favourite Nyquist are hoping gate 13 proves lucky for the unbeaten colt for a second time in the Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

The last start Florida Derby winner took last year’s G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile wearing the number 13 saddle cloth and now has the same gate for the Derby.

“He’s doing so well. Breaking from the 13 is fine,” said Nyquist’s trainer Doug O’Neill.

“He was number 13 when he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland. The post draw didn’t matter to us but we’re happy being more towards the outside for sure.”

Second choice Exaggerator drew two spots inside of Nyquist.

Ridden and trained by brothers Kent and Keith Desormeaux, he arrives as a head-turning 6 1/4-length winner over Mor Spirit in the G1 Santa Anita Derby on April 9.

The Bob Baffert-trained Mor Spirit (Gary Stevens) will leave from stall 17 barring any scratchings.

“The last time I had the 17 post in the Derby was Point Given with Gary Stevens, and here we are again,” said Baffert, referring the 2001 Kentucky Derby fifth place finisher who went on to win the G1 Preakness and Belmont Stakes en route to Horse of the Year honors.

“All the speed is on the outside. It’ll probably be two different races going on.”

San Felipe Stakes winner Danzing Candy has drawn the far-outside 20 gate and is expected to go for the early lead.

“At first you’re kind of stunned when they say 20, but when you start thinking about it, it’s not that bad,” said his trainer Cliff Sise, Jr.

“It’s better than the one hole, especially for a speed horse.

“It might be in our favour. We’re outside of any other speed horse, so we’ll take it.”

Nyquist and Wood Memorial hero Outwork are expected to be close to the lead early.

Outwork, a Mike Repole homebred, will wear the number 15.

Trainer Todd Pletcher’s other representative Destin, last seen beating Outwork in the G2 Tampa Bay Derby in March, will break from stall nine.

“I’m good with them,” Pletcher said. “We like the 15 for Outwork. It gives us some room inside and I’m OK with the nine for Destin.

“The posts themselves are fine.”

Steve Asmussen, who was recently named as a 2016 inductee to the US Racing Hall of Fame, is well represented as he seeks his first Derby victory.

He has G1 Arkansas Derby winner in stall three and his G2 Louisiana Derby hero Gun Runner will be two stalls wider in five.

Mohaymen, the Derby favorite for much of the winter until he finished a disappointing fourth in the Florida Derby, breaks gron 14, the last stall in the main gate.

Brody’s Cause, winner of the G1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 9, drew 19.

Laoban and Cherry Wine are the first and second emergencies. They will need scratchings by 9am Friday to compete.
