California Chrome Shines In Pacific Classic At Del Mar

Champion 5YO California Chrome kept his unbeaten record in 2016 intact when he produced a stand out performance to win the G1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Saturday.

California Chrome’s anticipated clash with outstanding G1 winners Beholder and Dortmund fizzled when the Dubai World Cup winmer made it a one-act affair.

Jockey Victor Espinoza took California Chrome straight to the front and from there he was never threatened to record a five lengths victory for his fifth win of the year.

Beholder, a three-time Eclipse Award winning mare, finished second with Dortmund third.

California Chrome started the season with a win in the G2 San Pasqual. He then went to Dubai and won an allowance race at Meydan before a dominant win in the $US10 million Dubai World Cup at his second attempt after a failure in 2014.

Her then returned home to beat Dortmund in the G2 San Diego Handicap before his Del Mar win which sets him up to be US Horse of the Year for a second time after he claimed that title in 2014.

Trainer Art Sherman is now aiming Califnornia Chrome at the $US6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita on November 5.

California Chrome’s record now stands at 23 starts for 14 wins and four placings and record earnings of $US13,252,650.
