Photo Call Ends Tepin's Winning Sequence At Keeneland

Galileo mare Photo Call recorded her sixth win and second at G1 level when she upset champion American mare Tepin in the First Lady Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday.

The Mark Casse-trained Tepin was chasing her ninth successive win but could not run down the leader Photo Call in her prep race for the Breeders Cup Mile at Santa Anita next month.

Trainer Todd Pletcher prepares Photo Call for Teresa Viola Racing, who purchased the 5YO for $3 million at last year’s Keeneland November Sale from a syndicate that included BBA Ireland’s Patrick Cooper and racing columnist Bill Oppenheim.

Photo Call won last year’s G3 Violet Stakes and the G1 Rodeo Drive Stakes to earn a start in the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf when having her final start for her previous owners, finishing fifth.

She had recorded one victory from six previous starts for Teresa Viola in the G3 Orchid Stakes in April.

Photo Call is bred on the successful Galileo/Danehill cross being a daughter of the Rock Of Gibraltar mare Theann.

She is maternal granddaughter of the noted G1 mare Cassandra Go (Indian Ridge), the dam of Irish 1000 Guineas winner Halfway To Heaven whose daughter Rhododendron (Galileo) was victorious in last Friday’s G1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket.

• ANY Given Saturday sired a notable Group double on Saturday featuring a victory in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park in New York by the 5YO entire Hoppertunity.

The Bob Baffert-trained Hoppertunity (Any Given Saturday x Refugee by Not Accounted For) secured his second G1 victory when he came with a late charge tfor his first win since February.

The Breeders Cup Sprint winner Mongolian Saturday gave Any Given Saturday a double when he took out the G3 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland at his first start of the year in America after racing in Hong Kong and England.

• THE Chad Brown-trained 2YO colt Practical Joke added another G1 victory to his tally when he landed the G1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park.

The talented two-year-old is unbeaten in all three career starts including the G1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga.

Practical Joke is by Into Mischief from Halo Humor (Distorted Humor) and was the first leg of G1 double for his trainer Chad Brown.

• CHAD Brown also trains the Divine Park mare Lady Eli, who returned to form with her third G1 victory in the Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday.

The winner of the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf made her return to racing after a long lay-off with a second in the G2 Ballston Spa Stakes at Saratoga in August, her only loss in eight starts.

Lady Eli was first sold for $160,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale and made the same price sold againb as a two-year-old.

• INTO Mischief, the sire of top juvenile colt Practical Joke, had a notable double when Vyjack, a 6YO son of the Harlan’s Holiday stallion, set a course record in the G2 City Of Hope Mile Stakes at Santa Anita.

Vyjack had not won a stakes race since he landed the G2 Kelso Handicap in 2014.

Into Mischief is the sire of 16 stakes winners including two G1 winners.

• GEMOLIGIST, a Kentucky-based freshman sire by Tapit, was represented by his first stakes winner when the Christopher Clement-trained filly Yellow Agate won the G1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park.

Yellow Agate is out Lemon Sorbet, a daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, and is now unbeaten in two starts after breaking her maiden at Belmont Park last month.

• AMERICAN Pharaoh’s classic winning sire Pioneerof the Nile has sired his third G1 winner with the victory of the Mark Casse-trained 2YO colt Classic Empire in the G1 Futurity Stakes at Keeneland.

Classic Empire is out of Cat Thief mare Sambuca Classic had won the G3 Bashford Manor Stakes at his second start but lost his rider in the G1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga.

• PULPIT’s 4YO star Lord Nelson landed his third G1 win for the Bob Baffert stable in the Santa Anita Championship Stakes to remain unbeaten for the year.

Lord Nelson (Pulpit x African Jade by Seeking The Gold) had not been seen since landing the G1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar in July.

• MISS Temple City was back in winning form on the turf on Saturday when she won the G1 Shadwell Mile at Keeneland.

The Graham Motion-trained Miss Temple City (Temple City x Glittering Tax by Artax) had been been beaten in three starts since she won the G1 Mile Stakes in April.
