South African Star Out Of Breeders Cup

Champion South African mare Smart Call has been ruled out of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mares Turf at Santa Anita on Saturday week.

Smart Call, currently in training in the UK, has been under a cloud since her scratching on the morning of the G1 Sun Chariot Stakes when she was found to be lame.

“We regret to update that Smart Call will no longer be taking part in the Breeders Cup,” trainer Alec Baird reported.

“Unfortunately she has not had enough time to heal properly. The original injury has shown signs of flaring up again and it’s apparent she hasn’t had enough time for the ligaments to heal.

“The California dream is therefore on hold.

“She will recuperate through the winter. If all goes well next year then we will once again consider the Breeders Cup.”

Smart Call was South Africa’s Equus Champion Older Filly/Mare and Champion Miler last season.

She received an invite to the Breeders’ Cup following her win over Inara in last season’s G1 Paddock Stakes.

Owned and bred by Mauritzfontein Stud, she has won seven of her 16 outings including this year’s G1 1 J&B Met where she accounted for subsequent Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle by three and a half lengths.
