Sadly - but perhaps inevitably - this proved to be the racehorse's last appearance. His connections have spirited him away to stud after only six races. Flightline  missed the Triple Crown season through injury.

Another of the big Classic favourites, Epicenter, has also retired. He picked up an injury at Keeneland and will also be heading to stud ($45k a pop, if you're interested).

Beyond the headlines generated by Flightline, it was a great meeting for European horses. Six of the seven turf races were won by the visitors.

Rebel's Romance (Turf) and Modern Games (Mile) completed a double for Charlie Appleby, whileTuesday, the Oaks winner at Epsom in June picked up the Filly & Mare Turf for Aidan O'Brien. Appleby and O'Brien finished the championships with three winners each. Appleby's success with Rebel's Romance was his sixth win from his last eight races at the meeting. Aidan O'Brien enjoyed three winners at a single Breeders' Cup for the first time. Ryan Moore won the Bill Shoemaker Award for top jockey.

Excitement is already building for the 2023 renewal - still 11 months away. The landmark 40th running of the Breeders' Cup will be at Santa Anita Park.
