The 2000 Guineas was redemption in many ways for Godolphin's Appleby-Buick team as Notable Speak brought his winning form from the Kempton AWT to the turf at Newmarket, starting at 9/1. Very hot favourite City of Troy was disappointing to say the least but we have always said it's a tricky transition from 2yo races to 3yo ones. The reliable Rosallion was second and Haatem 16/1 for Richard Hannon and James Doyle was a good third with Ghostwriter just pipped out of the frame.
The shock winner of the 1000 Guineas was Elmalka 28/1 for Roger Varian and Silvestre de Souza. We have always loved Porta Fortuna but thought this might be too tough for her – it wasn't and she took second having started at 11/1 with the brave French filly Ramatuelle third. Our roughie Rolica came 6th so she stays in the Little Black Book.
