Staking Strategy: Devonport - Sunday, 19th May 2024

Sunday thoroughbred racing is in Devonport, where a nine-race card begins at the very early time of 11:12.

Racecourse : Devonport (Australia).
Racecourse : Devonport (Australia).

Most races run pretty deep with over 100 acceptances for the day.

R1 Ladbroke It! Maiden, 1150m

Stars In The Night (10) resumed with a second in class 1 company, so now looks well-placed returning to maiden grade. She'll likely lead or box seat from barrier 1 and has a great chance to win at her 21st start. Lightmeupjazz (7) only just missed when she returned after strong market support. The trifecta spaced the rest there with Delamere (5) in fourth, who was made to work fairly hard for the lead. Glenn Stevenson has picked up Lispector (8) for $13k after four starts for Price/Kent Jnr, where she started no bigger than $4 but only returned one placing. This stable warrants enormous respect with tried horses. Rich Glow (3) was no match for the two that finished ahead of him at his first local start, but the form has been franked with Gie It Laldy winning on the last Devonport program.

R2 Kevin Sharkie Maiden/class 1, 1880m

Havlicek (2) was very brave in defeat last time, sitting outside a genuine speed and only being grabbed late by one that had the drop on him. He's hard fit now and should give a sight on speed again. Kreglinger (9) was third in that race and was jumping from 1220m-1650m, so should strip fitter again here. Montezuma (5) placed in "BM68 grade" last start and was scratched from a harder contest than this a week ago. This is his first go on the synthetic. Rocheaux (8) won at his first start for the stable over a mile, beating Shakeeda (12), who won four days later. Miles 'N' Miles (10) can also be tied into that form and looks ready to win a race with Newitt going aboard. Pinandi (13) had plenty of supporters last time but had no hope with where she landed and how that race was run. Hewie (3) and Migtymaxi (4) are back in class and have claims in a race that brings a lot of different form together, which is rare for this class and distance.

R3 Goodstone Group Maiden, 1350m

Kickpass (2) went back from a wide gate on debut, before closing very strongly from an impossible position. He draws off the track again, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a change of tactics over the longer trip. Ensign Eagle (1) didn't have a lot of luck in the straight at his first start. Interestingly, he jumps from 1009m-1350m when a shorter option was available in the opening race. Henley Extreme (11) is another bargain buy for the Stevenson stable, bringing solid form over longer distances. Geegeehailstorm (6) was no match in a fast maiden in Hobart but did jump $1.40 in this class at the prior start.

R4 Tasmanian Horse Transport Class 1 Handicap, 1350m

Wide no cover at his last two starts, Gee Gee City Boy (1) is due a change of fortune. He has a softer draw here and a new pilot with Byrne Burke replacing Sanderson. Mikazuki (4) has ensured a genuine gallop at his last two and is now right back in trip with visors replacing blinkers. He could junk the race up by putting the handlebars down and may take catching if that happens. Sir Jag (3) was wide in a $50k race last Sunday and good in this class at the start prior. Alpine Kate (5) was looked after in a recent trial and warrants thought for a stable that has produced 65% of his career wins at this track. Daiquiri Diva (8) has her form trending the wrong way but hasn't missed a place in two Devonport runs, which includes her only win. Stablemate Lika Mosh (12) is a major player but needs two scratchings to gain a start. Risist Capture (6) did enough resuming but may already be looking for further, and watch for a market lead on Bella Tesoro (7), who has her first Tasmanian start for Stu Gandy.

R5 Thai Imperial Bm60 Handicap, 1650m

Alpine Affair (2) savaged the line in a slowly run race won by a stablemate at the last Devonport program. He races well here and looks suited by the rise to 1650m. Coppleson (4) was decent at a big price in the same race and is another where the mile appears positive. My Demetra (1) is likely to find the top and boxed on doggedly after racing outside the speed last start. That was a strange race where the first three cleared out but weren't going overly hard. Lion's Tooth (3) was the best of the closers from the chasing pack in that race, while Three's A Crowd (5) would've finished closer if not being blocked for a run in the home straight. Flight Ready (6) was a T&D winner in easier grade last time, with a big margin back to third. That form can be franked earlier in the day.

R6 Lending 4 U Bm68 Handicap, 1150m

Thoros Of Myr (7) enjoyed the run of the race when returning with a victory as a short favourite a fortnight ago. Second in that race was a maiden, so this is a significant class jump heading to BM68 grade. Fake Magic (1) was first home of those that come via a sit/sprint won by Seydoux. Initisar (6) and The Spirit of Zero (4) had no chance with how that race was run in easily excused performances. Cornelian Bay (8) had heavy market support resuming and ran well. Both he and stablemate Vokes (9) get weight relief for the rise in class. Gee Gee Plane (2) rarely runs poorly in Devonport and maps for a nice trail behind the speed. Ethical Dilemma (5) resumes with a good fresh record and blinkers on but hasn't won since May 2022.

R7 The Stables At Spreyton 0 - 62, 1150m

Power Magnum (4) relished a return to Devonport last start and a gun ride by Jackson Radley. It's a slightly awkward draw, and he rises 0.5kg, but he'll run well again with even luck. It was a blanket for the minors in that race, including Gee Gee Can Win (1), Sunshine Moshe (6), Bao Bun (11) and Mr Freeze (12), who all finished within a length of each other. Champagne Cinders (9) was able to control from the front when victorious at the midweek meeting in late April. That doesn't seem likely here from a wide draw and Gaffney duo Bluff Point (8) and Muisca (13), who are generally on-pacers. In the same colours, Alpine Aviator (10) is back in class and wasn't disgraced first-up. That form is tested in the previous race. The penny dropped for Shooting North (2) last campaign, which resumes without a public appearance. O'Reilly McLuke (5) was smashed in betting before being softened up on the speed in a 0-60. His form prior to that was better than it reads. Stablemate Gunship (3) pulled up with a high heart rate and slow recovery after failing to beat a runner home in the Autumn Classic last Sunday.

R8 What The Froth Bm76 Handicap, 1350m

Carneros (5) came with a well-timed run to win at the return Devonport meeting, turning around his grass track form. He meets those that finished behind him worse at the weight, namely Alpine Blast (8) who has since franked the form and Mywordis (3). The third placing for Mywordis there took his record to 10 placings from 11 starts at the T&D. Gallant Warriors (6) was the best sectional closer in the race won by the stablemate and raced well over 1400m in Launceston during the night season. Sir Simon (1) and And Beyond (2) are clearly the two highest-rated horses and will give weight to the field as a result. Both race well in Devonport. The same can't be said for Azara (4), who does her best racing in Launceston, which is a bit odd given she's trained at the track.

R9 Torque Gear For Guys Bm64 Handicap, 1880m

Brazen Impact (4) has led from barrier to box at his past two, and repeat tactics seem likely as he chases a hat-trick. He's on trial at the trip, so how much pressure he receives up front may be key to the race. Moorboozie (5) and Hellot (1) cleared out from the rest at the T&D last start. Hellot meets the winner 1.5kg better this time around. Sugoi Legend (2) was a distant third in that race but did take a while to wind up while the quinella were off and gone. Weldborough (3) broke through last start, given a great ride by Muhcu. He's another that isn't proven at the mile but may well land in the right spot again.
