The Map looks to secure Melbourne Cup spot

South Australian stayer The Map will carry the hopes of a state when she tries to gain automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup in Saturday’s $500,000 Listed Andrew Ramsden at Flemington.

The Dan Clarken and Oopy Macgillivray-trained mare is poised for an Adelaide Cup rematch with Excelleration in the 2800m feature that can secure a guaranteed start in the race that stops a nation on the first Tuesday in December.

Clarken and MacGillivray are under no illusions of what a win on Saturday would mean for the classy galloper.

"We're still of a generation that can remember at primary school, firstly listening to a radio and watching the Melbourne Cup at school,'' MacGillivray said.

"It's the first race most kids remember and it's incredible,'' she said.

The Map has come up favorite on the back of an impressive return to racing winning the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Morphettville on Derby Day and the co-trainers said it would be a special feeling to secure a start in the great race with a horse who means so much to their Murray Bridge stable.

"It's an Australian dream,'' Clarken added of a having a Melbourne Cup runner.

"The thrill would be if win an Andrew Ramsden, then your direction to the Melbourne Cup just opens up,'' MacGillivray said

"You can do whatever you feel necessary to get her there,'' she said

It's an intriguing race for The Map who comes off a brilliant win in Adelaide and will be ridden by Damian Lane for the first time with Jamie Kah committed in Queensland.
