Racing NSW Recognises Thompson's 4000

One of New South Wales racing’s favourite sons, Robert Thompson, made Australian racing history last Saturday by booting home a record 4000th winner at Broadmeadow Racecourse, Newcastle.

To honour Robert’s achievement, Racing NSW Chairman, Mr John Messara, will make a presentation on behalf of Racing NSW during Emirates Park Scone Cup Day on Friday 16th May.

Mr Messara will be joined by Scone Race Club Chairman, Mr Noel Leckie, who will be presenting a vase to Robert Thompson.

Racing NSW Chief Executive, Mr Peter V’landys, said passing this milestone is a credit to Thompson’s hard-working ethics.

“Robert is one of the most humble people you could meet and without doubt everybody in the racing industry looks up to him,” Mr V’landys said.

“He has been riding for 40 years which equates to averaging 100 winners a season – that is an incredible feat.”

Thompson’s accomplishment is all the more remarkable as he was sidelined for nearly two years after fracturing an ankle in a race fall at Warwick Farm in 2004.

In July 2008, Thompson broke the late Jack Thompson’s Australian record of 3372 winners and Robert continues to ply his trade day in and day out.

Thompson rode a treble at Muswellbrook last Friday to sit on 3999 wins before scoring aboard Lay Down the Law at Newcastle on Saturday (3 May).

When asked whether he would celebrate his amazing feat on Saturday night, Thompson replied: “I’m going home to put on the fire and get to bed early – I have to ride at Mudgee on Sunday”.

Thompson had just the two rides at Mudgee finishing with a pair of seconds on Hot Art and Are You Sure.

Racing NSW Chairman of Stewards, Mr Ray Murrihy, said Robert Thompson’s last suspension for careless riding was back in May 2007 – and Thompson has had 5380 rides since.

“Robert has a genuine passion of the industry and respect for his fellow riders. He rides very safely and never takes unnecessary risks yet he still gets the results.”

Racing NSW Jockey Liaison Officer & Mentor, Mr Ron Quinton, said: “Robert is a complete horseman, a real expert. He's done it all, he's won Group One races in Sydney and he hasn't changed a bit, he's still a top bloke and a great rider.”
