A late plunge on Astern left punters smiling after the colt won the 2016 Golden Rose at Rosehill on Saturday.

Astern was the best-backed late with the TAB, shortening from $4.60 to $3.30 in the last 40 minutes of betting.

Runner-up Omei Sword was $3.20 favourite on Tuesday and continued to drift from $4 to $4.80 today.

Yankee Rose – who was unplaced – was backed from $11 on Tuesday into $5.

A late rally for Mackintosh paid dividends with the gelding firming in the last 15 minutes of betting from $14 to $9.50 before winning the 2016 Theo Marks Stakes.

Southern Legend – who finished third – did ease as favourite from $2.60 to $3.10 but held the most support.

The runner-up Counterattack was $4.20 into $3.80 Saturday morning before closing $4.20.

Ravi was just unable to land the major prize in the 2016 Sheraco Stakes after opening $7 on Wednesday and shortening from $5 to $4 on Saturday.

The winner Heavens Above had support late in betting ($9 into $8).

Nancy – who was unplaced – was $9.50 into $6.50 before closing $7.50.

At Flemington Black Heart Bart was a heavily supported favourite in the 2016 Makybe Diva Stakes but the Darren Weir stablemate Palentino was a shade better.

Black Heart Bart was as much as $2.40 into $2 before closing $2.05 and notable bets included $8,000 at $2.30 on Thursday, $10,000 at $2.10, $7,500 at $2.05, $8,000 and $6,000 at $2

Palentino eased throughout the day from $5.50 to $8.50.

Earlier favourite punters were left to lament after Defcon finished out of the placings in the 2016 Danehill Stakes.

Defcon opened $5.50 on Wednesday and was backed today from $3.80 into $3.10.

The race was won by Saracino, who was $7 into $6 before closing $6.50.

Faatinah rewarded punters who snapped up the $10 on offer on Saturday morning, backing him into as short as $5 before closing $6 in the 2016 Bobbie Lewis Quality.

Fourth placegetter Under The Louvre was popular around the $4.80-$5 mark (closed $5) while Kinglike – also unplaced – was as short as $4.40 out to $6.

Original favourite Xtravagant – as short as $4.20 on Wednesday – drifted on Saturday from $5.50 to $6.50.
