Plans to start Mongolian Wolf in Saturday’s G3 Rough Habit Plate at Doomben have been aborted after he failed to get space on a flight from Melbourne to Brisbane.

“We wanted to take him to Brisbane but we put him in at Caulfield as a back-up,” trainer Darren Weir said.

Mongolian Wolf won three races and was G2-placed in the Avondale Guineas in New Zealand for his former trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman before his sale and transfer to Weir in March.

He made quite an impression at his Australian debut when Weir produced him to win the G3 Frank Packer Plate over 2000m at Randwick on April 15.

Weir sent his Doomben Ten Thousand acceptors Sooboog and El Divino to Brisbane by road but Mongolian Wolf remains in Melbourne for Saturday’s Noel Rundle Handicap over 2000m where he carries the topweight of 59kg after a 3kg claim for apprentice Mitch Aitken.

Mongolian Wolf was among the the big team of horses Weir started in trials on the course proper at Ballarat on Monday. He won his trial beating classy stablemate Voodoo Lad.

Weir plans to send Mongolian Wolf o Brisbane after Saturday’s Caulfield race for the Grand Prix Stakes and Queensland Derby.
