Quirky Glamour wins again

Trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace regarded Secret Glamour highly enough to run her in the ATC Australian Oaks last autumn and she may yet earn herself another shot at black-type grade.

Secret Glamour, who finished midfield in the classic, has returned in great order as an older horse, adding to her last-start win over 1600m at Sandown with a gritty victory in the Schweppes Handicap (1800m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Johann Gerard-Dubord, the Sydney stable foreman for Maher and Eustace, said the mare had been a work in progress but was starting to hit her straps.

"She has always shown plenty but she is not easy, she has her quirks and she has taken us a long time to figure out," Gerard-Dubord said.

"She's still getting better and still maturing, but physically she has come back much stronger this time in and hopefully she keeps getting better."

No plans have been locked in for Secret Glamour, but the timing could be right for her to tackle a race like the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day.

"We will just have to see how she comes through that," Gerard-Dubord said.

"The timing would probably work fairly well and the step up in trip again because she's ready for it, she's fit enough."

Ruby proving a gem for connections

Ruby Tuesday started at double-figure odds but she was arguably the most popular winner at Rosehill on Saturday.

Ten per cent of all prizemoney earned by the mare, along with ten per cent of her training fees, are donated to breast cancer research and she has now collected more than $35,000 for the cause.

James Fathers, racing manger for Ruby Tuesday's trainer Gary Portelli, said the stable was delighted by the result.

"It's a fantastic win for a huge ownership group, particularly because she is a charity horse," Fathers said.

"Ten per cent of all prizemoney and training fees goes to breast cancer research, a cause that is close to all our hearts.

"Louis (Mihalyka of Laurel Oak Bloodstock) organises it all. They have a breast cancer and a prostate foundation horse every year and I think she'd be the best one they've had."

Ruby Tuesday has competed at stakes level in the past and while the stable is focused on keeping her winning momentum going, they haven't ruled out a return to higher-level racing.

The Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Gosford on December 28 could come into consideration if she continues to do well.

"We have always thought plenty of her, it's just great to see her have another Saturday win today," Fathers said.

The Portelli yard has been in outstanding form with Ruby Tuesday taking the trainer's winning strikerate to 50 per cent of his last 12 starters.

"The stable has been flying, that's our sixth winner in the last 10 days," Fathers said.

"We had a winner in town last night (at Kensington) and five winners last week."

Magic Millions goal for Zoumon

Zoustar made sprinting his forte, but his son Zoumon is showing promise as a stayer, posting his second win in succession in Saturday's Fujitsu General Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill.

Lumping topweight of 60kg, Zoumon set the tempo and just as the challengers looked to be launching their runs from the pack, he found another gear to kick clear and defeat his Tulloch Lodge stablemate King Of Clubs by 1-3/4 lengths.

"It was good, sustained speed and that's his strength so we wanted to play to those strengths," co-trainer Adrian Bott said.

Zoumon, who was fourth in Hitotsu's ATC Australian Derby (2400m) in the autumn, is out of a daughter of Monsun and Bott said that was where he got his stamina.

"That Monsun blood on his dam's side, it is so versatile in terms of the ground and I think that opens up options for him going forward with his distances," Bott said.

"He's got that staying ability, even though he's by Zoustar, on that female side he can certainly stay.

"He ran great in the Derby. He'd had a pretty long prep at that time and stuck on well. A few of those in the Derby had a bit more brilliance than him, but he's a nice, tough stayer and he will keep going through his grades and improving."

Bott said the Magic Millions Subzero (2200m) at the Gold Coast in January was the long-range target for Zoumon, possibly via the Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Boxing Day.

He was also rapt with the return of former European King Of Clubs, who was strong late in what was his best effort since coming to Australia.

"It was unfortunate he bumped into a horse that's in great form, on the up and rock-hard fit and hard to run down, but it was a great performance," Bott said of King Of Clubs.

Vreneli gives Reece Jones a double

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott juggernaut continued into the next race with Vreneli showing fight to outlast his competition in the Ranvet Handicap (1200m).

It was a tough effort after the horse was made to work early to find the front and Bott admitted he thought Vreneli was going to be overpowered in the final 200m.

"At the furlong, I thought they might have had him but even if he got beat, I would've thought it was a good effort," Bott said.

"He kept picking himself up and fighting.

"The conditions suited today with the nice, fast track and we utilised the claim (of apprentice Reece Jones), so things fell into place for him and he's a talented horse on his day.

"He's suited to racing at this time of the year to go through his grades."

Vrenelli ($5.50 equal favourite) lasted by a long head over Rainbow Connection ($7), who tried hard, with Soami ($10) running boldly for third, another half-neck back.

The gelding's win gave Jones a double on the program after he earlier saluted aboard The Dramatist for Rod Northam in the TAB Highway Handicap (1500m).

Quote of the day: "I've got a feeling there's a lot more here. I only gave her a couple of taps with the stick and she just put a few lengths on them straight away." – jockey Tommy Berry on I Am Me after her impressive win at Rosehill on Saturday.
