Penong to honour Bushy with Trainer's Award

Penong Racing Club will offer an $8000 incentive for trainers at this year’s Cup meeting with the leading trainer on Cup Day awarded the inaugural Bushy Trenowden Trainer’s Award.

The leading trainer will walk away with $5000 in prizemoney, the runner-up also securing a $2000 prize with $1000 going to the third placed trainer at Penong's lone meeting on March 11.

An icon of South Australian country racing, Trenowden passed away in August aged 77.

He took up training horses in the 1970's where he dominated Eyre Peninsula Racing winning a host of premierships and country features training more than 400 winners and winning seven Ceduna Cups.

Along with his successful training career Trenowden was equally influential off the track serving as the Ceduna Racing Club President for several years, was a life member of the Ceduna Racing Club and Eyre Peninsula Racing Association and was also awarded Most Outstanding Achievement by an Individual at the Racing SA awards.

Further to his support of the Ceduna Racing Club, Trenowden was invaluable to securing trainers to attend the Penong Races and proving advice to the Penong Racing Club and Committee.

"He will be remembered by most in our industry as a leading trainer, mentor, supporter and friend," nephew Greg Irvine said.

"The amount of voluntary work he did for the club and industry in general is immeasurable,'' he said.

The series will be decided on a 3, 2, 1 points system while the Penong Racing Club will again be offering float rebates.
