Spreyton trainer Barry Campbell is hoping for a form reversal from his talented two-year-old Cairns in the $150,000 Fairmont Furniture Gold Sovereign Stakes over 1200m in Launceston on Sunday.

Cairns scored an emphatic win on debut in the Alfa Bowl (1100m) in Launceston defeating Needs Sugar by almost two lengths.

But at her next start in Hobart, she had her colours lowered in the $125,000 Listed Elwick Stakes by Needs Sugar that blitzed the field, winning by three lengths being eased down on the line.

But Campbell said his filly's run was too bad to be true.

"My filly went into the Elwick Stakes in great order, even though she hadn't raced for five weeks," Campbell said.

"Anthony (jockey Darmanin) said she didn't seem to handle the track and that sometimes happens down there (Hobart) when they see the track for the first time and have to deal with that uphill stretch in the back straight.

"Anyway that's all I can put it down to because she came home and ate up and hasn't missed a beat since.

"We know she races well in Launceston so we are hoping she can turn it around on Sunday."

Trainer Stuart Gandy is confident Needs Sugar will go into the Gold Sovereign at the top of her game and if she takes her Elwick Stakes form into the race, she is clearly the one to beat.
