Johnnie set to pinch first win

A late change of plans could prove to be a winning move for 2YO Johnnie Pinch in the opening race, the Ladbrokes Mates Mode 2YO Maiden (1120m) in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Originally trainer John Keys was going to bypass the race but then had second thoughts.

"I wasn't going to go but then I saw they are mostly first starters, so I thought well we've got a bit of advantage straight away.

"I like the horse, he's still learning but he's a really nice horse," the trainer said.

Johnnie Pinch has raced three times and has twice been placed, last time out finishing third behind Sassy Boom in the 2YO Magic Millions.

"I dropped my lip, he got back to seventh and I expected him to be closer than that but gee his last 200 metres, I'd love to see what the time was."

The main danger to Johnnie Pinch could be the first emergency Sir Jag. On debut, Sir Jag finished fourth, just behind Johnnie Pinch and could well turn the tables.

Keys will also saddle up Snowing In Paris who resumes the Sportie's Hotel Maiden (1420m).

"She's a bit new to the stable, I don't know much about her, she's a very well-bred horse, if you looked at her form you wouldn't touch her, but I don't think her form is as bad as it looks."

Snowing In Paris comes to the Keys stable having raced in country Victoria and NSW, she is yet to be placed in five runs and hasn't started since last October where she finished second last in a maiden race at Dubbo, however her trials at Longford suggest she may be able to win a race here once she settles in.

Codi mainland bound

Last season's premier jockey Codi Jordan will be in for a busy night, riding in all nine races on the card in what will be one of her last meetings here before heading interstate.

Jordan, who won the apprentice title in her first year of riding and both the senior and apprentice titles last season, will be moving to Victoria on 20 March to take up a three month stint with the powerful McEvoy stable at Ballarat. If successful, Jordan may complete her apprenticeship there.

Best bets

The best bet on the program is Summer Fire in the Ladbrokes Sports Bar BM68 (1220m). She has a great record at the track and distance and will find this much easier than her last run in the Bow Mistress in Hobart, while one to watch is Myocardium in the Punters Assist Maiden (1220m). A newcomer to the Barry Campbell stable, he was heavily backed pre-post last week but failed to gain a start.

Racing gets underway at 17.45 with the last of nine scheduled for 10:00. Full coverage on Tasracing TV will be live hosted by Jacob Bevis, while Matt Reid and Jason Witham will have the final five races on Sky Thoroughbred Central.
