Red-hot Morton targets Adelaide Cup

Fresh from a red-letter day at Ascot on Sunday, trainer Dan Morton is aiming for interstate success at Morphettville this afternoon.

Still on a massive high after plundering Perth's feature three-year-old races 24 hours earlier, Morton will saddle up Stafford's Lad in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m).

Morton's stocks in the WA Oaks (2400m) and WA Derby (2400m) have risen considerably on the back of She's Fit and Another Chino's spectacular wins.

She's Fit won the Natasha Stakes (2200m) by two lengths, running home strongly to defeat Megami with raging favourite Admiration Express fading to third.

30 minutes later Another Chino stamped his WA Derby credentials when he reeled in in brave runner-up Demolish in the J.C.Roberts Stakes (1800m).

TABtouch is quoting Stafford's Lad at $15 for the Adelaide Cup, behind Grand Promenade ($5), Highland Jakk ($5.50) and Persan ($5), the only runners under $10.

Stafford's Lad, an eight-year-old, races second up in Adelaide after finishing sixth to Highland Jakk in the Lord Reims Stakes over 2600m two weeks ago.

Morton says Stafford's Lad reminds him of a typical dour stayer and testing him over 3200m had been part of his planning for a couple of years.

"I would like to think he can win it," Morton told The Races WA.

"I've been looking forward to him over two miles (3200m) for a long time.

"He's very fit and very well going in and it will be a good watch.

"It's a two mile race worth a lot of money and he deserves his chance.

"Last year we were looking down this line, but due to Covid we couldn't organise it properly.

"His lead in run (Lord Reims) was good and I'm looking forward to the two miles.

"I give him a real chance, he's a dour stayer and has proven that.

"He's very sound and in a good vein of form.

"He has been over two miles very early in his career and ran a good race.

"He's a more mature horse now and I'm sure he will be thereabouts."

Stafford's Lad had his first start for Morton in a 58 + at Broome.

He since won the Kimberley Cup (2020m), the ATA Stakes (2200m) and the Kalgoorlie Cup (2200m).

17 career placings also include the Broome Cup (2200m), the Kalgoorlie Cup (2200m), Tattersalls Cup (2100m), Towton Cup (2200m) and Perth Cup (2400m).

In a 16-horse Adelaide Cup line-up, Stafford's Lad will jump from barrier 11.

He will be partnered by Chris Parnham.
