With stable apprentice Celine Gaudray heading to Brisbane for her first Group 1 ride, trainer Pat Carey has called on some outside help with his two runners at Caulfield. 

Carey has Crestani engaged in the Catanach's Jewellers Handicap (1200m) and stablemate Starlight Scope in the Michael Walker Farewell Handicap (1100m) on Saturday. 

Gaudray rode the two horses for Carey at their most recent assignments but is heading to Eagle Farm on Saturday to partner Excelida in the Tattersall's Tiara (1400m), her first shot at Group 1 glory. 

With Gaudray in Brisbane, Carey has engaged Laura Lafferty and her 3kg claim for Crestani while Beau Mertens will partner Starlight Scope. 

Both horses are resuming from a break. 

"We've engaged Laura Lafferty and her three-kilogram claim as Celine is not available," Carey said. 

"She's going up to Brisbane to ride in the Tatt's Tiara which is really exciting for her." 

Crestani will be looking to break through for his first win since October 2021 on Saturday. 

Carey said the five-year-old was not a big horse and his best runs have been when down in the weights. 

After Lafferty's claim on Saturday, Crestani will carry 55kg. 

"We've always run him in a class above to get him down near the minimum and he's always performed well," Carey said. 

"He's done a good job and he's had some good performances against better company. 

"He had a solid jump-out at Caulfield last week. I thought he went pretty well behind Starlight Scope, but the sticking point is the barrier." 

Starlight Scope is having her first start since January but showed her fitness with her 800m jump-out win at Caulfield last week. 

"She's been off the scene for a little while and she's come back well," Carey said. 

"I was happy with the jump-out, but she's got to take that to the races now. 

"Some give in the track will be nice and judging on the track how it was last week, it should be perfect."
