Hasta La War kicks of spring campaign

South Australian galloper Hasta La War kicks off his Spring Carnival campaign at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Sue Murphy-trained stayer hasn't raced since running third behind Lunar Flare and White Marlin in the $500,000 Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes at Flemington in May - a Melbourne Cup qualifying race - and resumes in the $175,000 Hatherlie Stakes over 1700m.

"He had a month off after Flemington and has come back in really good order,'' Murphy said.

"He had a jump out at Casterton and then the trial at Stawell, we had to keep him wide and out of the wet ground, but Linda (Meech) was really happy with him.

"His tendons are great, he feels massive, and he looks terrific in the coat,'' she said.

The Naracoorte trainer is hoping things can finally fall into place for the horse who has won eight of 24 starts in a career that has been halted through injury.

He was on the verge of running Adelaide Cup favourite in 2020 before he succumbed to a tendon issue.

After a lengthy lay-off he returned in 2021 building a fitness base during the Adelaide Carnival.

He had another short break before finding winning form at Morphettville in September then going to Melbourne to run third in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield and third again in the Group 3 Geelong Cup behind Tralee Rose before injury again ended his Melbourne Cup dreams.

Hasta La War was back at the track earlier this year winning the Listed Port Adelaide Cup at Morphettville in April before his gutsy Ramsden effort and Murphy said the horse would again be given every chance to line up in the race that stops the nation on the first Tuesday in November.

"He'll have this run and then be back at Caulfield in three weeks for the Naturalism over 2000m,'' Murphy said.

"From there he will go to the Bart Cummings over 2500m and then hopefully the Melbourne Cup,'' she said.
