Mayfield-Smith brothers turn back the clock

The Mayfield-Smith brothers, Lawrie and Noel, will turn back the clock more than three decades when they saddle their starters at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Noel Mayfield-Smith will make a rare trip from his Coffs Harbour base for a city midweek in Brisbane when Headley Grange lines up in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Benchmark 65 Handicap over 1400 metres.

And, older brother Lawrie is hoping the lightly-raced Prolific Melody can live up to her last start placing in the Maiden Plate over 1000 metres.

Lawrie Mayfield-Smith believes it will be the first time since the early 1990's that the pair have had a runner each on the same day at a metropolitan track in Brisbane.

"I don't think we've had runners on the same day here for about 30 years," Lawrie Mayfield-Smith said.

"I'm pretty sure Noel is coming up for his race and hopefully both of ours will be competitive."

Prolific Melody had plenty of supporters last start when she ran home strongly for third in a 1200 metre Maiden event at Ipswich on October 11.

"She got too far back last start and even though she's dropping back in distance there's plenty of speed in the race which suits and the bigger Eagle Farm track will suit her," Lawrie Mayfield-Smith said.

"It's a hard race and Lindsay Gough's first starter (Jonny Da Wolf) has been trialling well and looks the danger."

Prolific Melody was a $40,000 buy at the Gold Coast March sales as a yearling but Lawrie has restricted her career to only five starts while she matures.

The 72-year-old Lawrie Mayfield-Smith is one of the longest serving trainers in Brisbane and has been given the all clear following a recent battle with bowel cancer.

He has trained many good horses over the years, with his best win coming thanks to Post Elect in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes at Randwick in 1990.

His younger sibling, Noel, is famously known in Queensland for winning the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap with Landsighting in 2000.

Noel's last Brisbane runner was Regina's Girl who finished seventh to the Les Ross-trained Ciccone in a 1200 metre Maiden Plate at Doomben on June 7.

Headley Grange – a Michael Cahill mount – won on debut over 1115 metres at Grafton in late September and is coming off a last start third in a 1300 metre Class 1 event at Taree on October 6.
