Sugar sweet to start a busy week

The Hobart meeting which coincides with Melbourne Cup Day is traditionally one of the most popular and well-attended meetings of the year.

The day kicks off with the first of seven races at 10:55 and the last at 14:40, which is 20 minutes ahead of the start of the Melbourne Cup allowing punters and participants to enjoy the race that stops the nation.

The Hobart track looks to be in perfect order after a break, and with the rail in the true position, there should be some very competitive and entertaining racing.

Looking for a best bet, I thought Needs Sugar should kick off her 3YO campaign on a winning note in the JBM Group 3YO (1100m).

The filly, who was recently named the Tasmanian 2YO of the Year for last season, has raced only five times for a win and three second placings, and looked sharp in a couple of trials at Longford recently, winning both.

There should be plenty of speed in the race with Popilita setting the pace and Needs Sugar getting a lovely trail.

The other good bet on the program is Monte Bianco in the Mingari & Co BM60 (2100m).

Although Tuesday's race is her first try at the trip, she was a fast-finishing second at her most recent run over 1600m in Launceston and looks cherry-ripe for the step up in distance.

From barrier two, Monte Bianco should get a soft run and be too strong for her rivals.

Following the Hobart meeting, thoroughbred racing returns to Launceston on Wednesday under lights and then back to Hobart on Saturday, which coincides with the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Launceston trials

The new crop of 2YO's stepped out for the first time at the Launceston trials last Friday, and Siggy Carr looks to have a promising type in Ms Tasmania winning her trial by 2.25 lengths, clocking 46.51 seconds for the 800m.

The other 2YO trial was won by Olive Girl, trained by Stephen Shaw in a time of 47.37s.

Star sprinter Turk Warrior, now back in the care of his original trainer Glenn Stevenson, was an impressive winner, as was promising 3YO D'oro Star. Both will be competitive whenever they make their racing return.
