Froggy lands feature double

Craig ‘Froggy’ Newitt made it a treble for the night, and a feature race double when visiting galloper Indispensable caused an upset taking out the $125,000 Listed Rayner Transport Conquering Stakes (1400m) in Launceston on Wednesday night.

The Inevitable ($1.30), aiming for three Conquering Stakes in a row, got back to the tail of the field before finishing gamely without ever looking a real winning hope.

Sent over to John Blacker to contest the feature WFA races over the Summer Racing Festival, Indispensable ($26), a renowned wet tracker, enjoyed the rain-affected going and, after beginning well from barrier three, sat on the fence behind the speed and dashed clear upon straightening.

"The plan of attack was to send him down to run in our major races down here and then he will head back home.

"We ran him in the Newmarket, and he only got beaten a couple of lengths, I knew he would improve a lot tonight, and we got the result," the trainer said.

In the race prior, D'Oro Star underlined his exciting potential with a brilliant all-the-way win in the $75,000 Steve's Liquor 3YO Trophy (1400m).

Taken straight to the front by Newitt, D'oro Star ($4.20) gave nothing else a chance, winning by two lengths from Thespian Waters ($4.60), who came from the tail of the field with outsider Winning Witness ($34) third.

D'oro Star has always shown plenty of potential. His first start in Devonport was a breathtaking win, and he was far from disgraced with two subsequent placings.

D'oro Star gave Devonport trainer Liandra Gray her biggest win and is a half-brother to Group Two winner Still A Star, who retired with 10 wins and more than $870,000 in the bank.

The truth is she's very smart

Early in the night, the 2YO feature went the way of Geegees Mistruth who made it two from two and confirmed she is the standout early season 2YO after her impressive win in the $50,000 Alfa Bowl (1100m).

Caught wide for most of the trip, Geegees Mistruth ($1.95 – $1.33) had 2.75 lengths to spare after she was eased down, beating her stablemate Geegees Legacy ($51 – $19) with first starter Zoete's Rock ($10) third.

"She's a nice filly; she looked a treat tonight and ran accordingly.

"There's a lot of work involved, often with no result, (I think) education is the key.

"They are like kids. They've got got to school. Some of them take a bit longer, but any education is not wasted," trainer Stuart Gandy said after training the quinella.
