Lindsay Gough hopes to strike gold at Warwick

Trainer Lindsay Gough and larrikin owner Bill Mumford have shared in many wins during their long friendship and hope to add the Magic Millions Country Cup to the list of successes at Warwick on Boxing Day.

The Bill Mumford-owned Constant Flight – a Georgina Cartwright mount - will warm up for his Magic Millions Country Cup assignment at the Gold Coast next month when he steps out in the 1200 metre Warwick feature.

"He's a Magic Millions horse so he's already in the Country Cup next month," Gough said.

"He's coming along well and trialled nicely when he ran third at Doomben earlier this month.

"Ideally, I would have liked to give him another trial but he'll be competitive."

Lindsay Gough is yet to train a Group 1-winner but having Constant Flight run in the Magic Millions Country Cup at the Gold Coast next month will be just as thrilling for the former North Queenslander.

He also will be there with promising sprinter Viminele who is targeting the Magic Millions QTIS race on January 13.

Constant Flight hasn't started since finishing ninth to the Matt Kropp-trained Tears Of Love in the Warwick Cup over 1500 metres in the middle of October.

It followed the nine-year-old's victory in the Cairns Amateur Sprint in early September.

"He had done a lot of travelling by the time he ran in the Warwick Cup and it takes its toll," Gough said.

"By the time he got to the Warwick Cup he had had enough."

Mumford enjoyed Group 1 success with the Peter Moody-trained Reward For Effort in the Group 1 Blue Diamond in Melbourne in 2009 while Gough still dreams of training his first winner at the highest level.

He went close with Rampant Lion who finished second in the Doomben Cup in 2008, which was won by the Mike Moroney-trained Victorian, Sarrera.

Gough and Mumford have trained and owned many good horses in their 15-year-old association including the injury plagued Right Or Wrong who was a seven-time winner including the Mackay Newmarket in 2021.

The pair also won last year's Cleveland Bay Handicap in Townsville with old warrior Wren's Day.

Another of Mumford's top buys was the Billy Baker-trained former Victorian Consular who was a $20,000 purchase and finished his career with 16 wins in 85 starts and more than $1 million in prize money.

Consular's best performance was in the 2004 Stradbroke Handicap when he finished second to the Bob Thomsen-trained Thorn Park.
