On song for more fillies features

Victorian filly Wings Of Song is likely to be set for the $125,000 Strutt Stakes and $150,000 Tasmanian Oaks, both over 2100m, later in the Tasmanian Summer Racing Festival after her impressive win in the Listed Ladbrokes Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) in Hobart on Friday.

Trained by Patrick Payne and ridden by Jye Mcneil, Wings Of Song was a little slow to begin and settled back near the tail before making her move.

"From the 1200m mark when I was able to get three wide with cover and know that I could improve when I felt need be, I was always confident she was going to run well and she had good change-up speed and stuck out the mile really well and 2000m won't be an issue," the winning jockey said after the race.

It was a hit-and-run visit by McNeill, with the 2020 Melbourne Cup-winning jockey having just one ride.

The best-backed firming from $4.80 into $2.90 favourite, Wings Of Song has been stabled with Adam Trinder at Latrobe since arriving in the state. Trinder and Payne, both former jumps jockeys, are long-time friends.

Runner-up Island Warrior ($18) put in a strong performance after being caught wide for the trip, while D'Oro Star ($3), who was vetted prior to the start, battled on gamely to finish third.

No rush for Charlie

"He could be a Cups horse next year." That was the comment from trainer Glenn Stevenson after lightly raced 5YO Charlie Bucket made it four wins in a row from just five race starts taking out the BM72 (1600m).

Heavily backed from $1.65 into $1.30, Charlie Bucket sat second for most of the trip before surging past Londiani ($15) at the 250m to win, racing away by almost three lengths.

"He should only improve; he's still going to be a better horse next prep.

"He's had a lot of head issues; if he pulls up well, we will try and find another race; some of these horses can race on to six, seven or eight, so we won't press the button too soon."

It was another day, another treble for Stevenson while his former stable apprentice Codi Jordan also booted home three winners.

The pair has been dominating the Tasmanian scene in recent weeks. Stevenson has trained 12 winners from his past 30 starters while Jordan has ridden nine winners from her past 30 rides. Six of Jordan's winners have come from the Stevenson stable.

Stevenson is on target to win his first trainers' premiership, leading John Blacker by five wins, while Jordan sits second on the jockeys table, just two behind Anthony Darmanin.
