Ladbrokes Blog: Eagle Farm Preview – 20th January 2024

The 2023/24 Queensland Summer Racing Carnival ended last weekend, but that doesn't mean there isn't still great racing in the Sunshine State.

That's certainly the case with Saturday's Brisbane Racing Club meeting at Eagle Farm where ten competitive races are scheduled to be run and won.

We've cast our eye over the form guide and provided our best bets for each race below.

RACE 1 - 1:13PM: QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap (1200 METRES)

Commanding Artist (1) ventures north from Sydney looking to win his first race.

The Ryan and Alexiou-trained Trapeze Artist colt led over 1200m at Randwick on debut before condition gave out late and he weakened to finish 4.11 lengths fifth to Parkour.

He'll be better for the experience and will strip fitter second-up.

Jimmy Orman has been booked to ride and should go forward and give them something to catch.

1 Unit – Commanding Artist (1)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 1

RACE 2 - 1:48PM: BENCHMARK 78 Handicap (2400 METRES)

Iowa (2) had been plying his trade in Sydney before coming to the Gold Coast last start.

The Annabel Neasham-trained six-year-old gelding fought bravely three starts ago over 2000m on a heavy Kembla Grange track when going down by a nose before being softened up and weakening at Randwick at his next start.

It was a similar situation last start over 2200m at the Gold Coast when he was taken on in front by Southern Stock who only managed to ruin the chances of Iowa with his silly move.

To Iowa's credit, he fought on gamely to finish second by a head.

In his other race start in Queensland, he dominated a similar class race to this over 2200m at Doomben where he won by 3.8 lengths.

Cejay Graham, who claims 1.5kg, can roll forward and give them something to catch.

1 Unit – Iowa (2)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 2

RACE 3 - 2:23PM: QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap (1300 METRES)

Bold Comic (1) brings strong form lines to this event through his last start fifth to the subsequent Magic Millions Guineas winner.

The Garnett Taylor-trained son of Whittington settled back in the Listed Gold Edition Stakes before finding the line strongly to get within three lengths of Abounding.

The rise to 1300m looks ideal fourth-up.

Jasper Frankin's 3kg claim comes in handy and while he has settled back in recent races, he can settle closer with the rise in distance.

1 Unit – Bold Comic (1)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 3

RACE 4 - 2:58PM: BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1000 METRES)

Ring Of Steel (5) looked to be a horse with potential when winning his second start by 6.5 lengths.

Unfortunately, things went amiss for the Kelly Schweida-trained son of I Am Invincible not long after that but his last start demolition job over this course and distance suggested that he may be back to his best.

He went to the front and was never headed, dashing clear to win by five lengths.

This race doesn't look much harder, and he's drawn to get a great run for Jimmy Orman.

1 Unit – Ring Of Steel (5)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 4

RACE 5 - 3:33PM: BENCHMARK 72 Handicap (1805 METRES)

Fleur De Monde (14) has been freshened since finishing fourth by 2.82 lengths over this course and distance last start.

The Chris Waller-trained mare was forced to go back from the wide gate and was tightened for room in the straight so there was merit in the run.

Two starts back she proved too strong in the heavy conditions when winning by half a length at Doomben.

She's drawn to get a great run for Mark Du Plessis.

1 Unit – Fleur De Monde (14)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 5

RACE 6 - 4:12PM: Class 6 Plate (1400 METRES)

Bettcha The Crown (11) returned in great order last start over 1350m at Doomben.

The Desleigh Forster-trained four-year-old gelding negated the wide barrier by going forward to lead.

He gave a good sight before the in form Midnight In Tokyo overhauled him late to finish half a length second.

He'll strip fitter second-up and with the lack of speed in the race, Kirk Matheson can adopt similar tactics to last start and give his mount every chance.

1 Unit – Bettcha The Crown (11)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 6

RACE 7 - 4:52PM: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200 METRES)

Black On Beauty (9) makes her return to racing following a 24-week spell.

The Tony Gollan-trained Zoustar mare finished last preparation in style with back-to-back wins, both over this course and distance.

She warmed up for this with a nice trial behind the speedy Zoustyle.

Angela Jones built a good combination with her last preparation and remains in the saddle.

2 Units – Black On Beauty (9)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 7

RACE 8 - 5:32PM: BENCHMARK 72 Handicap (1400 METRES)

Centrestone (8) has been racing well this preparation and looks primed to peak third-up.

The Chris Waller-trained mare found the line strongly to win over 1200m here by two lengths first-up.

Last start she settled back after drawing wide over 1350m at Doomben before doing her best work in the final furlong to finish third by a length to Midnight In Tokyo.

The rise to 1400m and the bigger Eagle Farm track suit and she has won third-up before.

1 Unit – Centrestone (8)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 8

RACE 9 - 6:10PM: BENCHMARK 90 Handicap (1200 METRES)

On The Lead (2) will appreciate the drop in class after competing in black-type races.

The Richard and Will Freedman-trained six-year-old gelding found the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes and Listed Starlight Stakes a bit beyond him.

Last start he was held up badly but rocketed home and should have finished a lot closer than the 4.7 length margin behind Noble Soldier over 1100m at Rosehill.

He won his only previous start over this course and distance.

A strong speed will suit and if Ryan Maloney can get him in clear air in the straight, he'll be fighting out the finish.

1 Unit Each Way – On The Lead (2)

BET NOW: Eagle Farm Race 9

RACE 10 - 6:50PM: BENCHMARK 90 Handicap (1600 METRES)

Freedom Rally (9) steps up to 1600m for the first time but looks well and truly ready for it.

Two starts ago the Tony Gollan-trained Rubick gelding made short work of a wide gate to win by two lengths over 1400m here.

Last start he worked home strongly and was taking ground off Tamerlane late when finishing second by just under a length in The Buffering at Doomben.

He loves Eagle Farm having won four of five starts at Headquarters.

Ben Thompson has won all three races on the four-year-old and should settle handy in the run.

2 Units – Freedom Rally (9)
