Punters peak with Dantes

Dantes was right back to his best with a solid win in the Shane Yates Memorial (1420m) in Launceston on Wednesday night.

Dantes has now won twice and been placed four times from just six starts, and connections are hoping the 5YO will make it as a stayer down the track.

On the strength of a narrow third in late December, Dantes was heavily backed to start $1.50 after opening at $3.50. From barrier one, he was given the run of the race by promising apprentice jockey Taylor Johnstone.

"We got a good run in transit; he was travelling beautifully coming to the corner. I thought I was going to be a little bit stuck for a run, but we got clear air, and he fired home," Johnstone said.

"I feel like he's still a little bit green in his racing. He's still got a bit to learn."

Johnstone made it a double when Pristine Image ($8) scored a nose victory over Thelma ($3.90) in the 1420m BM60.

Carr too fast

Coming off her record-breaking four winners last Friday night, trainer Siggy Carr produced former Queenslander Layla's Song to a first-up win in the 1120m BM 60.

Suited by a hot tempo upfront, Layla's Song ($10) swept past the leaders with 100m to go for an easy win.

"She's a full sister to Hannah's Song, and we had a lot of luck with her.

"She has won out over a mile. We will learn a lot about her tonight and map out a plan," Carr said.

Retirement plans on hold

Princess Tina will continue to race on after a daring ride by Mehmet Ulucinar landed the well backed runner ($71 – $10) the 2150m maiden/class 1.

Trainer Drew Tyson was considering retirement for the 6YO who had won just once from her 39 starts.

"It does take a pretty handy horse to lead all the way over 2100m. I was thinking about retirement (for her), but now she's earned another chance," Tyson said.

"There was no speed in the race. I was waiting for the other horses, but they never came," Ulucinar said.

Princess Tina dashed out to a six-length lead in the mid stages of the race, and although it looked like the others would make an impression, they couldn't get close with the winning margin at 6.25 lengths.
