Rhys Richards enters the training ranks.

Rhys Richards will have an element of expectation on his shoulders when Londiani gives him his first starter as a trainer in Hobart on Friday evening.

Five-year-old gelding Londiani is well-known in the Tasmanian ranks, with 21 starts and four wins, including two victories from his last three starts, the most recent just over two weeks ago on 21 January.

The previous connections decided to sell the horse, an opportunity that Rhys and other family members capitalised on.

"Dean (father) always goes through the sales, and we thought Londiani still had a bit of upside, as well as potentially more distance," said Rhys Richards of the $20,000 purchase.

Londiani ($8.50) steps out in the day's final race, a Benchmark 68 over 1390m, representing a drop in distance from the gelding's recent starts for previous trainer John Keys.

"He's won over the 1400 (metres) before, and I thought with a freshen-up, it should work out well for him."

23-year-old Richards is the grandson of trainers Julie and Keith Richards, providing an upbringing that has seen him involved with horses from a young age.

"I've always had good mentors and never been short of a horse to work with," said Rhys.

"I've had my training licence for about 12 months, and I think it'll still be a little while before I look to up the numbers."

While Rhys is new to the training ranks, he's been a long-time owner of Jaja Chaboogie, who contests the Group 3 Mystic Journey Stakes (formerly Bow Mistress) for the third successive year.

"Jaja is going well; we're very pleased with how she's travelling."

Derby hat-trick on the cards for Payne

Punters expect a third successive Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) win for trainer Patrick Payne, with Bold Soul a dominant favourite for the $150,000 feature.

Payne won the race in 2022 with The Nephew and last year with Dunkel. For Friday afternoon's opening quaddie leg, Bold Soul is the $1.60 favourite, drawing barrier 1 in a field of seven, with jockey Jake Noonan retaining the ride from his Listed Launceston Guineas win.

Four of Bold Soul's opposition finished behind him in Launceston, with the two exceptions being Victorian visitors, Gold Wolf and Stardealt, both rated as $19 chances.

Friday's card will be followed by the Sporting Clubs draw for the second leg of the Ladbrokes Community Sports Series (LCSS), and Hobart Cup Calcutta, both of which will be held in the Crown Lager Bar at Ladbrokes Park Elwick.
