Oxlade hints at what's next for stable stars

Shane Oxlade has finally had a chance to reflect on the momentous day for his family stable after his Group 1 success in Saturday’s $750,000 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield.

"It's been a busy few days,'' Shane Oxlade said.

"The phone hasn't stopped really and it wasn't until Monday (night) I had a chance to really sit down and take it all in,'' Oxlade said.

The Strathalbyn horseman said it was a surreal feeling, winning the race with Queman but also knowing that stablemate Sghirripa arguably should have won the race after he jumped slowly before producing the fastest 600m sectionals of the race.

"You can't take anything away from Queman, I said going in he was drawn to run the race of his life…. but Sghirripa was huge,'' Oxlade said.

"When I finally had the chance to chat to Froggy (jockey, Craig Newitt) he was just gutted.

"He said it was over before it began. Once they landed where he did nothing went right, a few people said he should have ridden for luck but I don't think that would have made any difference.

"His sectionals were enormous, and the vets went over him after the race and scoped him.

"The vet actually looked at me funny and I was worried and he said it was almost like he hadn't tried his recovery was that good. I thought gee, he's run the fastest and 600m and pulled up like that,'' he said.

Oxlade said he was still mapping out his next move with the pair who pose every trainer's most wanted problem.

"They're going to be very hard to place,'' Oxlade said.

"I said that even before Saturday and Queman winning the Group 1 makes it even harder now, but those are the problems you like to have,'' he said.

And he's been buoyed by just how well both horses have handled their work and travel loads.

"They arrived back on Sunday and have come through it super well,'' Oxlade said.

"I was expecting them both two be showing some signs of the run and trip away but both have fed up and have done well since.

"Sghirripa was bouncing off the float and squealing,'' he said.

After clashing in the Oakleigh Plate, the pair are more than likely to be headed in different directions going forward.

"At this stage Sghirripa will go to the Newmarket,'' Oxlade said.

"I don't think Queman would be a straight track horse, he seems to thrive around the bend.

"If we go back to Melbourne with him, I think the William Reid would be the race for him at the Valley.

"You know they go hard from the start and that's how he likes it,'' he said.

And Oxlade said he was fielding interest from some slot holders for the $4m Quokka at Ascot in Perth in April.

"We've had some slot holders asking about Sghirripa for the Quokka,'' Oxlade said.

"But I'm not sure he'd be up to another trip to Melbourne and then a flight to Perth after the campaign he's had.

"You're likely to run into a hard track over there, and also, if you go to a Quokka that rules out the Goodwood.

"It's near impossible to try and get a horse back and in good shape given the time frame.

"If they happened to ask the question about Queman I might have a different answer. He's a year older, and he's just thrived going to Melbourne both times.

"You can see it in his attitude, you could feel it before Saturday and he's just a different horse and I think being a year older he'd be better suited to something like that,'' he said.
