Taylor now a senior

Johnstone outrides claim.

Promising apprentice jockey Taylor Johnstone scored her 80th career win in Launceston on Wednesday night and will effectively be riding as a senior jockey from the next meeting onwards.

With the win aboard In The Ocean ($2.40) for her boss Sarah Cotton, Johnstone lost her 1.5kg claim at her 701st career ride.

"It's really rewarding, having a bit of time off (injury-enforced), It was hard to catch back up and get back on track, but I'm finally there, and the horse was amazing tonight," Johnstone said.

"We chucked the winkers on him for the first time tonight just to spice him up.

"He had been a little bit too cruisy. We got into a nice spot. He was travelling beautifully, and he put them away."

In The Ocean, he has raced just three times; he was placed at his first two runs and is now likely to be sent for a spell.

Johnstone celebrated her milestone with a second win for the night aboard Dantes ($2.40) in the BM60 (1620m).

The consistent 5YO made it three wins and seven placings from just 10 starts.

"Its all come at once tonight; the horse is in really good form; he's still very green and has a lot to learn.

"The main thing was to get him relaxed, and he did just that tonight, so yeah, really proud of him," the young jockey said.

One from the replays

Video watchers lined their pockets after Rue De Palais scored an easy win in the Class 1 (1220m) after being desperately unlucky in his previous run.

Well supported from $9 to start at $6, Rue Due Palais was taken straight to the front by jockey Craig Newitt, taking bad luck out of the equation and never looked like losing.

"He just got a squeeze out of the barriers last time and got put back on a slow speed, (tonight) was a race we thought there was going to be a lot of speed, turned out there wasn't; he was it, dictated the race and put them away," trainer Siggy Carr said.

"He dashed really good around the corner, and I reckon he could go back out to seven furlongs (1400m) next time; he's back in winning form, and hopefully, he can hold it," Newitt added.

Gun ride and too good

In a race dominated by on-speed horses, Navy Street ($4.60 – $3.60) landed some good bets after a perfect ride from premiership leader Anthony Darmanin in the Class 2 (1420m).

'Darma' settled Navy Street in third spot behind leader I'm Keefe ($12) and Kireina Marubrah ($21), and after getting a split at the top of the straight, scored a narrow win.

"He's been a model of consistency since he's come over, we gave him a little bit of a freshen since Hobart, and it's done him well," trainer Glenn Stevenson said.

Since arriving at Stevensons' stable late last year, the former Victorian galloper has raced five times for three wins and two seconds.
