Ireland maintain Six Nations' Grand Slam hopes against England

Ireland head into the penultimate round of the 2024 Six Nations aspiring to become the first nation to boast back-to-back Grand Slams since the 1997 and 1998 France sides that claimed the feat prior to Italy's involvement in the competition.

With matches against a re-building England and a resurgent Scotland on the schedule to complete their 2024 campaign, a 4/11 price to complete the Grand Slam is rather enticing with a hefty wager.

The Irish are considered 13-point favourites (Evens) in Saturday afternoon's game against England at Twickenham, with the visitors boasting a four-game winning streak against their English foes. All four of those victories have had points differentials of 13 or more.

Ireland have defeated France (38-17), Italy (36-0) and Wales (31-7) on their way to three bonus point victories, and the 30-point mark seems a decent line – over 29.5 team points is a 5/6 shout.

Hooker Dan Sheehan has scored in all three of his appearances in the tournament this season, but goes up against an England defence that has conceded just one try to forwards so far in the tournament.

Opposing wings, specifically no.11's, have scored four tries against the English, including a hat-trick from Scotland wing Duhan van der Merwe last time out. James Lowe starts in the 11 shirt for Ireland – he has two tries in the tournament and is 20/23 to notch in this one.

For England, wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso makes his first start after scoring from the bench in the country's last outing. A speculative bet on the Exeter Chiefs man to dot down (5/2) would be a longshot – Ireland have conceded zero tries, other than a single penalty try, in their last two matches.

The other Saturday fixture sees an impressive Scotland visit a competitive Italy in Rome. The Italians tied with France in round three and were a missed added time penalty away from a famous victory.

However, French ill-discipline aided Gli Azzurri in that match-up, and Scotland will likely provide a sterner test than the underperforming French. The Scots are an 11-point favourite (10/11) and have won the last 13 meetings between the sides.

Their last five margins of victory have been by 12, 12, 11, 42 and 11 – the majority in line with the bookies betting. However, with Scotland showcasing better form than in recent years and boasting a plethora of emerging talent, the over is likely the play.

Wing Van der Merwe has five tries in three appearances in the 2024 Six Nations and should enjoy his afternoon against an Italian defence that has allowed three tries from the wing position out of seven given up in the tournament.

Van der Merwe is 3/4 to cross, and 15/4 to bag another brace – which would be his third of the competition.

France travel to the Principality Stadium on Sunday in an iintriguing contest – the visitors favoured by 6.5 points in the contest. However, they do make eight changes and include three debutants in their XV.

The French still boast the firepower of Damian Penaud and Louis Bielle-Bierney on the wings, and they are joined in the backs by full-back Leo Barré and inside centre Nicolas Depoortere who make their first senior international appearances.

Both players are 3/1 to cross the whitewash, worthy of consideration, but a safer bet may be hooker Julien Marchand (15/8) – Wales have allowed Pierre Schoeman (Scotland) and Dan Sheehan (Ireland) to register tries from the front row.

Best Bets - (Treble – 15.25/1)

Ireland to win by 10 or more points and James Lowe to score a try – 6/4Scotland to win by 10 or more points and Duhan van der Merwe to score a try – 8/5France to win and Damian Penaud to score a try – 6/4
