Ladbrokes Blog: Eagle Farm Preview – 27th March 2024

There’s been plenty of rain in Brisbane this week but fortunately we’re racing at Eagle Farm this Wednesday where the track drains incredibly well.

Nine races are scheduled to be run and won on what looks likely to be a heavy track with the rail out 10.5m the entire course.

We've provided our top selections in each race below.

RACE 1 - 1:27PM: QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate (1000 METRES)

Ally (7) is on debut for Chris Munce following two trials and by all reports, has plenty of ability.

The daughter of Omaha Beach had her first trial in September but has been given time to mature since then and it has paid dividends.

She looked very good in a recent trial where she cruised around towards the front on a Soft 6 at Doomben to finish a close second.

The barrier isn't ideal, but she'll come in with scratchings and she has the early speed to find a prominent position.

RACE 2 - 2:03PM: QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate (1000 METRES)

Pareto (3) lines up to make his debut following an impressive trial at Doomben.

The David McColm-trained Pierata gelding showed electric speed to lead all the way for a 4.8 length win in good time.

Unfortunately, he comes up with a wide gate, but he has the early speed to cross and gets the services of top jockey Michael Rodd.

RACE 3 - 2:38PM: Maiden Plate (1800 METRES)

Hatasu (11) should be rock hard fit now given she's had four runs this preparation.

The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old filly put in her best performance to date last start over 1660m at Doomben where she settled too far back before finding the line powerfully to finish 2.2 lengths third.

The way she finished last start over a mile suggests that the rise to 1800m looks ideal.

This isn't the strongest maiden, so she certainly gets her chance to breakthrough.

RACE 4 - 3:13PM: BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1000 METRES)

Tikka Ready (1) can be forgiven for his last start failure at the Gold Coast as he raced wide throughout.

The Scott Morrisey-trained five-year-old gelding was in ripping form prior to that with four wins in a row before finishing a half-length second over this course and distance two starts back.

Three starts back he defeated Orlabent over 1000m here who he again meets in this race, but that horse is racing like he wants a break.

Yvette Lewis, who claims 3kg, is again in the saddle and she boasts an impressive record of four wins and two placings from eight rides on him.

RACE 5 - 3:48PM: BENCHMARK 70 Handicap (1400 METRES)

Deferential (9) looks hard to beat based on how well he has come back this preparation.

The Rob Heathcote-trained Defcon gelding made light work of the heavy 10 Sunshine Coast track first-up as he stormed home to win by 2.5 lengths over 1200m.

Since then he has run on strongly to finish two close seconds over 1200m at this track.

He's at peak fitness now and the rise to 1400m looks ideal with just 52.5kg on his back.

RACE 6 - 4:23PM: Maiden Plate (1200 METRES)

About To Explode (2) was very good on debut at Doomben and will have taken considerable improvement since then.

The Tony Gollan-trained three-year-old gelding was restrained to settle towards the back after drawing an outside barrier but despite that, he ran on strongly to finish 1.8 lengths to Metalart.

That horse won again last Wednesday in a much stronger race to frank the form.

He draws barrier 1 here so I would suggest that Jimmy Orman will be positive and settle in a more forward position.

RACE 7 - 4:58PM: BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1800 METRES)

Martedi (2) seemed a bit flat last start dropping back to 1600m at Doomben so I'm expecting a bounce back here with the rise back to 1800m.

The Gary Doughty-trained son of Maurice was very good two starts back when easily accounting for his rivals in a 2.3 length win over 1700m at Ipswich.

He won his only previous race on a heavy track so the wet surface should not faze him.

Noel Callow can give him an economical run from the inside gate.

RACE 8 - 5:33PM: Class 2 Plate (1500 METRES)

Houston Rocket (4) will have gained a confidence boost from his last start win at Ipswich.

The Chris Munce-trained son of Sebring settled back and ran on strongly to win by a nose with third a further 2.8 lengths away.

The rise to 1500m looks ideal and he did win over 1640m at Doomben when third-up two preparations ago.

He's had apprentices riding him recently so senior jockey Michael Rodd going on is a plus.

RACE 9 - 6:10PM: Class 1 Plate (1200 METRES)

Golden Image (8) took his excellent trial performances to the races when resuming over 1200m at Doomben.

The O'Dea Hoysted-trained three-year-old gelding settled in front before dashing clear to easily win by 1.5 lengths.

He'll strip fitter second-up and looks well placed under set weight conditions.

Boris Thornton takes the ride and should be able to either lead or settle in a prominent position if they go too hard in front.
