Australia book triathlon starts at Paris Olympics

Australia have a confirmed start in the mixed triathlon team relay at the Paris Olympics, plus berths in the men's and women's individual races.

AusTriathlon have achieved an important Paris Olympics qualifying mark as the sport aims to improve on disappointing Tokyo Games results.

Australia are among nine teams confirmed for the mixed team relay at the Paris Games, with fifth place on the international rankings.

That also means two berths in the men's individual triathlon and two in the women's event.

Top Australian Matt Hauser will take one of those spots after his eighth-placed finish at last year's world triathlon grand final.

The last opportunity for automatic selection will come at the May 11-12 world triathlon series race in Yokohama, Japan.

A top-eight finish there will earn a Paris start, otherwise it will come down to the national selectors.

Australia dominated Olympic triathlon when the sport made its Games debut at Sydney 2000.

But Tokyo was the second-successive Olympics where Australia failed to win any medals in the sport.

The Australian team was well off the pace when the mixed team relay event made its Games debut in Tokyo, finishing ninth out of 15 finishers.
