James Cummings knows Broadsiding needs to turn the tables on some of his Champagne Stakes rivals, but the trainer is confident his colt from a Group 1 family can do so at Randwick this Saturday.

The son of Too Darn Hot meets not only Group 1 ATC Sires' winner Manaal in the 1600-metre event, but also Linebacker and Anode, who had Broadsiding's measure when he finished third in the Group 3 Baillieu Stakes at Rosehill on March 30.

Broadsiding bounced out of that 1400-metre event to win last week's Listed Fernhill Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, which gave Cummings confidence to press on to the $750,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes.

"He heads to the Champagne attempting to upset that A1 form of Manaal, who comes through all the right races," Cummings said.

"Even the impressive win of Linebacker in the Baillieu, he had the edge on Broadsiding that day.

"But you just can't help but think Broadsiding has improved from that run and he's going to turn up a better horse in the Champagne."

Broadsiding brings to the Champagne almost identical form to Prized Icon, who provided Cummings with his first Group 1 win in his own name when he won the 2016 Champagne Stakes.

Prized Icon backed up in the Champagne after winning the Fernhill Stakes, having finished second in the Baillieu Stakes.

Cummings thinks it was a good preparation for Broadsiding and is pleased with how he has come through last week's win.

"(He) raced away from them in his first attempt at 1600m like a seasoned pro," Cummings said.

"That bodes well for him for a crack at the Champagne Stakes, he just relished the 1600m and recovered nicely from the race.

"He was licking his lips after the Fernhill win and he's been licking the bin all week."

Broadsiding, who will be ridden by James Mcdonald, is striving to land another Group 1 for a family that has delivered good results for Sheikh Mohammed.

By one of Darley's popular shuttle stallions, he is the second and final foal out of the late Street Cry mare Speedway, who is a half-sister to Flit, a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro who won the 2019 Thousand Guineas.
