Australian men win softball World Cup

Australia have won their second men's softball World Cup, beating Canada 5-2 in the final on the back of a complete game by teenage pitcher Jack Besgrove.

A complete-game gem from teenaged pitcher Jack Besgrove has set up Australia for their second men's softball World Cup title.

The 18-year-old starred in Sunday's final, allowing only four hits and striking out 10 over seven innings as Australia beat Canada 5-2 in Auckland.

It is the first time Australia have taken out the World Cup since 2009.

Canada shut out Australia 6-0 in the opening round, but Besgrove's pitching and two errors from the Canadians were key to the reversal.

Australia opened their scoring in the first inning with two runs, initially thanks to the Canadian left fielder catching a fly ball from Marshall Kronk that was heading foul.

Had the ball been allowed to drop into foul territory, the two Australians on base would have had to stay where they were.

But the catch meant the ball was in play and a Canadian throwing error then compounded the situation, allowing the two Australians to score.

Australia scored another run in the third and two more in the sixth to keep the Canadians at arm's length.

Kronk was named the tournament's most valuable player for his hitting and pitching, while Brendon O'Byrne (second base) and Nick Shailes (third base), who was a member of the winning 2009 team, were named in the tournament All-World team.
