Pat Cummins starred with the ball on day one at the SCG but Pakistan could take heart from their two best individual batting performances of the series.

AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN, Third Benaud-Qadir Trophy Test, SCG, Day One.

SCORE: Pakistan 313 (Mohammad Rizwan 88, Pat Cummins 5-61), Australia (0-6, David Warner 6no)

SUMMARY: Pakistan's innings could hardly have gotten off to a worse start, losing openers Abdullah Shafique and Saim Ayub for second-ball ducks and slumping to 2-4 after electing to bat first. Babar Azam (26) again failed to live up to his billing as one of the world's best batters, trapped lbw as the first wicket of another great day for Australian captain Pat Cummins. His side in serious trouble at 4-47, wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan forged a 94-run partnership with Salman Ali Agha to pull Pakistan back from the brink of despair before being caught at fine leg in another Cummins breakthrough. Paceman Aamir Jamal was an unlikely hero for Pakistan, frustrating the Australian attack with a beautifully made 82 runs from 97 balls in only his third Test match. When Jamal holed out in the deep, Pakistan were all out, leaving David Warner to survive a nervy six-ball cameo in his final Test match.

PLAYER OF THE MOMENT: As was the case in the Boxing Day Test, Cummins single-handedly swung the game into Australia's favour just as it looked Pakistan were getting the better of their hosts. The paceman had already dispatched of Azam and Saud Shakeel when Rizwan, playing the best innings of any Pakistani batter this tour, pulled his bouncer to Josh Hazlewood in the deep. Cummins helped to mop up the tail, but admittedly struggled for answers as Aamir ran riot late.

STAT OF THE DAY: Aamir Jamal's 86-run partnership with Mir Hamza was the largest 10th-wicket stand at the SCG in any Test match since New Zealanders Stephen Boock and John Bracewell made 124 together in 1985.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I probably should tell him it's been in my backpack for the last couple of days". The hunt continues to find David Warner's baggy green, stolen in transit from Melbourne to Sydney, but teammate Mitch Marsh lightened the mood after day one.
