Geoff Ogilvy battled with the 12th hole at Royal Queensland all week.

But unlike the rest of the Australian PGA Championship field, the former US Open champion is in a unique position to do something about it.

He is a partner in Ogilvy Cocking Mead (OCM), a design firm appointed as architects at Royal Queensland, where golf will be played at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.

Ogilvy played the course in January and was back this week, carding a tournament-best 65 on Sunday to finish six under.

"You'll have to wait and see," he said of his plans.

"It's a work in progress. There's probably a few things I'd tweak here and there, but I think fundamentally it's really good.

"Strategically it's interesting. It's not drivers everywhere. There's options off the tee."

He raved about the 18th hole and particularly the bunker on a wide fairway exactly where he'd like to hit his tee shot.

But he is less a fan of the 12th, which he described as "a mess of a hole".

"You can hit a good shot there and be unlucky ... probably a smidge extreme that green, because the lay-up doesn't guarantee you a par.

"I think the sign of a good hole is one that if I want to give up birdie, I can guarantee myself a par ... and there I'm not quite sure you can.

"But it's certainly interesting and it's probably a fun hole to just stand there and watch golf all day. There's three people doing three different things."

Ogilvy will head to Melbourne for the Australian Open from Thursday, set to be played at Victoria and Kingston Heath Golf Clubs.

"I know I can compete and win if I put it altogether, but I've been one of the guys who's played 25 tournaments a year on a big tour and come back here and I know how that feels, and I don't feel like that right now," Ogilvy said of his self-confessed part-time professional status.

"It's quite frustrating when you expect to play like I used to play when I played every week, and I just don't and you make silly little errors that you wouldn't.

"I don't have too high expectations (but) I'd love to play well and get in the mix."
