Cameron Smith will start his bid to win the PGA Championship in a heavyweight group, paired with world No.1 and newly-crowned Masters champion Jon Rahm and reigning US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.

Smith now plays on the LIV Golf breakaway tour but as British Open winner gets automatic entry to the PGA Championship, which traditionally groups the three previous major championship winners.

The Australian-Spanish-English trio tee off at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York state, at 8.33am local time Thursday (10.33pm AEST). On Friday they go out at 1.58pm (3.58am Friday AEST).

Smith tied for 13th in the PGA Championship in 2022, his best result in the event.

He tied 34th at last month's Masters but, in his last outing on the LIV circuit in Tulsa last week, charged home to make a three-way play-off before losing to Dustin Johnson.

Fellow Australian Jason Day is also in a marquee group with Americans Bryson DeChambeau and 2011 winner Keegan Bradley.

Adam Scott is playing the first two rounds with Americans Max Homa and Tony Finau.

World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler has been grouped with two-time PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka and 2019 US Open champion Gary Woodland.

Another heavyweight trio features three PGA Championship winners: reigning champion Justin Thomas, world No.3 Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa.

Min Woo Lee is the first Australian out on Thursday, at 9.27pm AEST with American Andrew Putnam and Emiliano Grillo of Argentina.
