Min Woo Lee has revealed he could be heading for the bright lights of Las Vegas if he hits the jackpot at the British Open this week.

The rising star of Australian golf said nothing was set in stone but should he seal his PGA Tour card, he was most likely to make his base at the US desert resort that's become a golfing hotbed.

A big week at Hoylake would, he feels, seal the deal in securing that card and he's started well, recovering from an early double bogey to finish on level par in Thursday's opening round, the joint-best among the 10-strong Australian contingent at Royal Liverpool.

"If I get my card on the PGA Tour, it will probably most likely (that I'll go to Las Vegas), but it's not 100 per cent, nothing set in stone yet," said Lee, after battling back from an early double bogey to finish at level par.

"Every time I go there to Vegas, I play really well afterwards. Time to just wind down and have fun. There's a lot to do in Vegas, and the food is amazing and the golf courses are unbelievable, too," enthused the 24-year-old.

And did he like to gamble? "Nothing crazy, no, but every now and then. Just a cheeky bet is fine."

Lee is growing his fan base around the world with golf supporters attracted by his many gifts as a player with attacking flair, fabulous ball-striking and considerable power, as was demonstrated in his fifth place finish at the recent US Open when he launched one drive 407 yards.

His friend and playing partner over the first two rounds, Harrison Crowe, marvelled at all the attention Lee was receiving from the galleries with the cries of "Min Woooooo!".

"He's awesome. It's quite amusing hearing everyone yell out his name out on the golf course. They all love him," said Crowe, who also partnered the man from Perth at the Masters.

"Absolutely, he's got an extraordinary talent. Everyone knows how good he is, and I think the best is yet to come for him.

"He's just growing more and more as a player. You're seeing that from some results in like the US Open the other week. He's just getting better and better. I think one day he'll be world number one."
