Oh brother: Lee slumps at Open despite Minjee cheers

Min Woo Lee's wait to emulate his major-winning sister Minjee is set to go on, despite her best efforts to gee him up on his flat afternoon at the British Open.

Minjee Lee came along to join the galleries at the British Open at Hoylake to cheer for little brother Min Woo - but it looks as if the Australian siblings' wait for a unique piece of golfing history will go on.

Min Woo appreciated his two-time major-winning sister taking time out from her own preparations for the Women's British Open next month to support him at Royal Liverpool.

But the 24-year-old rising star of the Australian game, who had noted in the week that he and Minjee could become the first brother and sister to win majors, ended Saturday as the picture of disappointment after going backwards on 'moving day'.

Lee, who'd been lying fourth-equal going into the third round, ended up shooting a one-over 72 after recording three bogeys in his opening six holes, effectively ruling himself out of the title hunt at 10 shots behind leader Brian Harman.

Just before going out on the course as cheerleader, Minjee was asked by broadcaster Sky Sports who had the bragging rights in the Perth-based Lee family.

"He doesn't have it up on me yet - but he might after this week," she smiled.

It doesn't look like it now, though.

"I feel like I'm out of the question for the title," conceded Min Woo, far from his normal ebullient self.

Regardless of what happens in Sunday's finale, Minjee, who's going for her third major win in the Open at Walton Heath in August, offered her ever-improving brother a glowing testimony.

"It's great to see him do so well and mature over the years," said the 27-year-old, who has had a poor season by her stellar standards.

"Especially when I'm not doing so well, or I'm kind of in a rut. I see him do well and it kind of spurs me on a little bit too.

"He's been putting really well, all year. He's a really strong ball striker, can hit it a really long way, and he really loves entertaining.

"That's what he's had on display this week, and all the other weeks in the US this season."
